Someone asked about undercarriage shots of my new guitar so here they are. I'm still gathering information about this guitar so any comments or observations would be appreciated.

Gerry

thanx gerry.it looks very similar to emmons but with the slight improvement of square crossrods.

so that makes emmons, promat and clr now as push pull possibilities.

bmi makes a push pull but it's a different concept.

that looks like a really well made contraption.

One thing I notice is that the strings do not pull straight at the keyhead. That might put undue stress on the strings and lead to breakage. Sorry to be negative but you did ask for observations. Rich.

Rich-
Thanks for the comment. This was my first attempt at changing strings and I wondered about that. I guess the trick is getting the string wound out further on the post.

Yeah, cut the strings a little shorter and wind to the short end of the tuner and you'll be good. CLR was certainly another PP alternate, but Charlie Reece is no longer with us. He was a master mechanic on Emmons PPs, and did make some great improvements on his own model. He built a great all pull model as well.

the string angles are no worse than mine have been for 40 years. i wouldn't worry about that. you'll find many people on this forum are more anal about dumb stuff than is necessary.

Chris, it's not so dumb if you think about it for a second. Not only does it put more stress on the string because of the angle, but it also puts a sideways pull on the roller and that might prevent the roller from rolling as freely as possible. That would of course have bad consequences like binding and maybe even buzzing.

i know ,bent...theoretically i suppose..but i guess what i mean is it's never caused any issue for me, and i'm a very sloppy, inconsistent string winder.

Cool guitar. I like the idea of a PP with square cross shafts...could you post a close up photo of the bellcranks?

Gerry,
I can't belive that someone took advantage of you and sold you that "junky guitar." I will even take it off of your hands to make ammends for that Shocked

All joking aside, I remember reading comments from John Fabian and Bud Carter stating that CLR's are one of the best guitars ever made. That is quite a statment considering John, who was very knowledgable and to the point, and Bud, who is arguably one of the best steel builders of all time! One day I hope to be able to see and play one. Congrats on your purchase!

Who is building this guitar? A push pull with square crossrods with easy change bellcranks - GREAT!!. As long as whatever the mystery element that gives an Emmons push pull it's distinctive tone is there it should be a keeper.

My guitar was made by Charles Reece, who passed away a couple of years ago. I don't know very much about Mr Reece but some others here on the Forum do. My sense is that this was not a major commercial endeavor for him and I'm not sure how many guitars he made. Perhaps someone else on the forum does. I don't have enough experience with PSG yet to discern if my guitar has the Emmons tone.
