| I've noticed that the pedal starter models (Carter Starter, Maverick, etc.) are sometimes selling used on the forum in the $400-500 range. That would not be a bad price for a decent console non-pedal guitar. Has anyone tried converting one of these, or maybe just using it as a non-pedal console by ignoring the pedals and knee levers? Would they make good consoles? Or is the whole idea flawed? |

i like the construction of non pedals better. heavier solid wood bodies and not the changer set up with the cams on an axle which remove the string vibration from the body a bit. with the tailpiece such that the strings on most lap or non pedals can press downward on the body really makes for more sustain and the the character of the wood used in the body comes into play more.
for the amount of money you would spend on a pedal guitar what you get is this. $400 or $500 into a pedal guitar gets you a pretty mediocre guitar...but the same money into a non pedal can get you a pretty nice guitar.
just my opinion.
if you are bent on it...get an old fender PSG. thick solid wood body with a metal frame. would make a much better instrument than the light box construction of a student steel. |

I think they'd probably be OK as a "console" lap steel. At one point years ago I aquired a Fender 1000 D-8 pedal steel that had all the hardware underneath removed and was set up strictly as a stand up type steel. I had it for about 6 to 8 months I think before I got rid of it and bought a S-10 Blanton pedal guitar. Now I wish I'd have kept it and maybe tried to find some of the mechanisms to get it back operational but hindsight is always 20/20 I guess....JH in Va.
