New band with a 'chick' singer
Just started rehearsing with a young female singer, the lovely Miss Lori Jo Henderson. She's into Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette, etc... absolutely loves the old stuff, and not one ounce of 'diva drama'.. We also do some 'off center' material, stuff that one or more band members just wants to do. We've got a few dates lined up in Dec to 'work out the kinks'. Mainly we're doing what we want to do, and making a lot of money is not the issue.. While this band probably doesn't have a lot of potential to make us rich, we're sure having fun!!
Dec. 13 - 'Bout Time, Austin, TX 9-12P
Dec. 21 - Saxon Pub, Austin, TX 6-8P
Dec. 28 - Saxon Pub, Austin, TX 6-8P
Here's a couple of samples from a rehearsal, done with a little Zoom recorder. Pardon the clams..

In bygone days, such an event would be frowned upon.........
A lot of bands way back when, tried the PRETTY GIRL up front format however, if it wasn't the fiddle player and the drummer fighting all of the time as to who was going to be her 'man-of the night'......
it was jealous girlfriends and/or hostile wives that frequently brought down the band. This was usually a short period of mere weeks......before the great idea was over and whoever tho't of the idea, was GONE!
Policy in those days were "NO GIRLS ALLOWED" in the band regardless of whether it was a wife, girlfriend or innocent bystander-wanna-be from the audience.
Good Luck to YOU guys! It seemed to work well with the great TIME JUMPERS band.

Ray, I know what you mean. I've played in bands with female singers many times over the years. They can really cause 'issues', but when you work with a good one, it can certainly be fun, and best of all you get to play material that you just can't do with a guy singer.
Thanks Jerry and John for the encouragement. The steel is way too busy on those rehearsal tapes, but I was sure havin' fun. I'm gonna have to do some homework on some of these songs, there are some great steel hooks. The one I DON'T play in D I V O R C E is first on the list. It's a cool one.

Chick Singers
I was in a band once with a good looking chick singer. One night the drummer's wife dashes into the club in a rage, took off one of her spike heals and proceeded to tear up his drum heads then smashed up all his traps.
The club owner promptly fired all of us on the spot and that was that.

Who could the club owner hire to top that act?Quesney Gibbs wrote:I was in a band once with a good looking chick singer. One night the drummer's wife dashes into the club in a rage, took off one of her spike heals and proceeded to tear up his drum heads then smashed up all his traps.

What do you suppose would have happened if an enraged HUSBAND had rushed in,jumped onstage and trashed the bands gear?Quesney Gibbs wrote:I was in a band once with a good looking chick singer. Hey Jon, Yeah, I've played Bout Time with some other bands, it's usually fun, despite the 'different' clientele. They're always a good audience, and the tip jar is usually good.

girl signer
I realize this was not a recording studio but as most times the music was so loud you could hardly hear her sing. Good luck with your gig.

Yes, the 'mix' is just what you get with these little recorders. The vocal was much louder in the room, but the PA cabs were not so close to the mics.

She's lucky to have found such good musicians to back her up. Sounds great, Bill!

Thanks b0b!
I've had several emails asking about the rig. It's a D10 Carter BCT (2001?) and a Session 400 from the 70's. Just amp reverb, no boxes.

You're probably right. Look what happened to Hank and Miss Audrey. Here's a link to "I Want to Live and Love Always" (or at least until 1951, when he divorced her and remarried.)Ray Montee wrote:...Policy in those days were "NO GIRLS ALLOWED" in the band regardless of whether it was a wife, girlfriend or innocent bystander-wanna-be from the audience...
I always thought Hank and Audrey sang well together, and this is one of my favorites of theirs...

Ronald, thanks, please do. I was born in Corsicana... haven't been there in many years. I think I still have some cousins there that I've lost track of.
Hey Chris, speaking of female singers, whatever happened to Karen French? That was one of the better experiences I've ever had. She was great..
I've definitely had some drama with female singers a time or two, but generally, my luck has been pretty good, and they CAN set you apart from the rest of the bar bands if you get the right one.

Hey Bill, nice sound y'all got going on there! Is this the young lady I heard you play with a year or so ago at that ranch south of here? Sounds like this will be a fun gig for you. Yeah, I agree with you, if you get the right one, a female lead vocalist can set you apart from the other local bands.
Heh... remind me to tell you my chick singer joke next time I see you.

Yeah, me too Chris. That's a great solo and Karen was a real sweetheart.
