My jazz-rock band meets my Desert Rose steel

Post by Jan Jonsson »

Hi,

Last month I had a gig with my four-piece jazz-rock band, Flat Five Society. This was the first time I played my new Desert Rose "Delta Blues" pedal steel guitar in that setting. Below are links to some videos from that gig (which also features a guest vocalist for some blues songs). The venue is a combined used-record store and coffee shop (hence the occasional background sound of a coffee grinder). I play my Desert Rose through a Fender Princeton Reverb amp, using a Seymour Duncan Twin Tube Classic for distortion and a TC Electronic Nova Repeater for echo effects.

Thanks all, for the kind comments. I actually managed to extract one more video from this concert, although it turned out very dark because the camera did not use the 'candle light' mode (as with the other videos).

That is beautiful, Jan. Great tone and playing!

Is that the Dan Tyack model Desert Rose? :)

What pickups are you using? The tone of that guitar definitely is perfectly matched to the music. When a lot of steel players play jazz, they just turn down the highs, but having the two pickups helps you get a 'non-twangy' tone that also has presence.

Thanks, Dan!

Yes, it is indeed the "Dan Tyack" model Desert Rose. The neck pickup is a Tonealigner wound according to your specifications and the changer pickup is a George L Eon.

Hey Jan....once again, your cool voice on steel is making a real difference in the big steel guitar picture! The Dan Tyack model is a perfect fit for your music on the C6! Way to go!

I really dug your playing, very unique touch, almost slide guitar-like (bottleneck) at times. Terrific tone, too.

Thanks, Dan, Rick and Mike! I really appreciate the kind comments. Extra kudos to Dan for inspiring me to invest in a Desert Rose guitar. Chuck Back has built an excellent instrument and the dual-pickup option is part of the excellence ... there are so many choices of tones and timbres available with two pickups. Below is a link to a video demonstrating a cool sound where the two pickups are used together. There are also some really nice close-ups of the guitar.

Cool, Jan. But you need some thick black glasses to fit in the group better.

I play with both pickups on about 80-90% of the time.

Jan, you're coming to St. Louis this year to play in the Jazz Room, right? Very cool! :)

Bring lots of CDs with you; I think you'll sell a bunch of them.

Rob: On five foot pedals, and three knee levers, I have the Emmons-style standard setup. Instead of a 3rd string C->C# raise on the fourth knee I have a 1st string D->D# raise + a 7th string C->D raise. My vertical has a 3rd string C->D raise. On my Desert Rose guitar I have a sixth (leftmost) foot pedal which is an experimental pedal whose setup changes from time to time depending on mood or music style.

Setup

Post by Rob Segal »

Jan,

Thanks. In the C6 setups I've looked at, I've found that beyond the standard Emmons 5 pedals and the 3 knee levers (lowering the 3rd C, raising and lowering the A strings(s)), the most common additional change is the F note in the middle of the grip. The second most common addition is the D note in the middle of the grip (which you've got).

Setup is, for sure, not the point here; your super playing is, and I dig it--great going,

Rob
