What is it, what does it do differently than my current AVG version 9, why do I need it ?

Is version 9 being phased out ?

It's hard to tell...

One of the tricks being pulled by antivirus software is that it doesn't scan the whole file, just that part of the file "most likely" to be infected or contain the infection code. That's why the scan completes as quickly as it typically does.

The new software may use newer algorithms to detect newer infection vectors.

I tried to install the update several times, but I got a failed error message. I don't recall the number it showed, but it stated something about an improper run time.

I get the download, extract boxes and everything but the install. Any ideas? I'm assuming it has something to do with my security settings, but I can't figure what. I don't really know what to disable. I use Firefox most of the time, but the AVG prompt takes me to IE for the update. Any help appreciated and I'm interested in the thoughts on Richard's question also.

I have had a notification for an available update to Windows Live Essentials. Is this the same? My update locks up at about 90% complete. Do I really need Live Essentials?

Will do, Wiz. I wasn't sure if they were the same thing. I have never heard of either one.
