" Where Did You Begin" Bishop Ronnie P. Hall

Post by Bishop Ronnie P Hall »

Hi again my fellow steelers!
I have been questioned about, where, when, and how you
came to the field of Sacred Steel? The journey for me began over 57-58 years ago, and much too long of a story. But thanks to my dear friend Bob Stone, who took the arduous task of producing his literary labor of love entitled, "Sacred Steel" Inside An African American Steel Guitar Tradition, by Robert L. Stone (C)2010. Also the labor of love by Brother Del R. Grace of the Sacred Steel, Archive Project, I thought that some of you would like to take a peek at the church environment that gave most of the sacred steel players, including yours truly, theirs, and my genesis, to the music you now hear. So here it is off of you tube. Enjoy!!!

Hi Richard, :D (Damron)
I`ve given the thought deeply about the choir, or at least an ensemble`. But in the meantime, I just thought, I would give a little insight to the type of enviroment, and culture that gave birth to a "why" do these guys play ( Robert Randolph, and a thousand other sacred steel players,)as they do! The expression of great joy, radiates from these types of fellowships.
Thanks my dear friend, it is good to share your wise thoughts and compliments.

Hi Chuck :D (Hall)
As it is written, (in a partial verse) "....the joy of the Lord is our strength." They, just believe in having a good time in the expression of their joy!
At any rate enjoy!
Ron (Namesake Hall!) ;-)

i wanna testify
back when i was 16, i was workin' in a factory in Norwalk Conn
after lodging at the local ymca, i rented a room w: a family who lived in a project
now the mom who ran the house, asked me the first day " you go to church son ?
we do, every Sunday - now if you're gonna live w: us here, you'll have to go too "
well i did & let me tell you, it opened my eyes, heart & mind
i had been brought up in part by my baptist grandma who set that "God fearing" quality in me
but Thanx to that family in Norwalk, i received the "God loving " quality
& so it has been to this day

Praise Him

That's a party, in a church. I have never seen that before. I wished people would let themselves go and dance like that at my gigs.. :-)

Hi Ron,

Thanks for posting this video. A classic Jewell Dominion service. Do I recognize Corroneva Burns, Bishop Harrison's drummer, in the brown suit?

Thanks to all you do and for all your great music. Ditto for Del Grace.

For those interested in more background info, here's a link to my book. It is available through all outlets. http://www.press.uillinois.edu/books/ca ... 35548.html

Keep up the good work brother. Hope to see you soon.

Warmest regards,

Bob

Hey Bob!!!(Stone), :D
My dearest of friends! Glad to hear from you! Oh yeah!!!! That is definitely Corroneva alright!!!  You cant keep a good man down ! Can you imagine, at his age? Still kicking, just not as high!!
I certainly hope that more of the forum steelers, look into purchasing your book. It is truly a facinating journey, a documented journey, concerning the genesis of a genre` of music that had been hidden for over seventy years, of which I am proud to have been a part of. It is a rich heritage. Thanks again, my friend.

Hi Ron,

Thanks again for all you do and for your kind words of support.

I'm still scheming to get up to Michigan before it gets too awfully cold for this Floridian.

Kindest regards,

Bob

You folks certainly believe in expending a lot of energy. :D It's hard to compare this to the Church of England services I used to attend, where everyone stood still or sat for an hour at a time.

No-one could keep still with all that great rhythm going. I think all denominations should shake a leg and boogie off all those built-in inhibitions that we build up over the week. 8) :D

It is a great time of fellowship, (all kidding aside). ;-)
