I don't know what made me do it, but I started watching this concert last night and sat through the entire thing. What a show!! I haven't been much of an Elton John fan since I was a young man in the early 70's.I also kind of liked Leon Russell, but had almost forgotten him. For the past 35 years or so, I have pretty much stuck to country music and Western Swing.
Russ Paul did a fantastic job on the steel guitar. I was glad to see that Elton and Leon shared the spotlight with the band members.What talent was on that stage!! I guess I must admit that, in spite of what I think of Elton John, he is worth every penny he makes.
My wife looked up Russ Paul on the internet. I did not get the whole story on him but, is he the son of the late guitar wizard Les Paul?
I hope some of you got to see this show. I loved it , but don,t expect me to sell my Remington Stringmaster and go buy a Stratocaster!!

I saw the show also...it was a very good show.

Russ spells his last name Pahl....not Paul.

He was playing an Emmons guitar....not sure if it was a p/p...it was missing the back neck and did not have a pad....but it did have 2 single coil pickups and he appeared to be playing thru a Fender amp...probably a twin.

If the show is replayed I'm recording it!

Well, for those of us on Dish Network, forget about seeing this - I just read this on Wikipedia.

On June 30, 2010, Dish Network permanently removed Fuse from its lineup, replacing it with a SD simulcast of the HD-only music channnel, Palladia.[11] On August 25, 2010, Dish Network removed the SD simulcast of Palladia, but has yet to take any other related action.

The show is scheduled to be re-broadcast twice on Sunday, and again on the 27th.

UPDATE: I don't know what happened to my original post here. Somehow it got totally mangled into meaningless gibberish. I'm sure it's because I did something wrong, but what the heck, I'll blame b0b anyway.

What I tried to write was that this is another example of people from the world of popular music bringing the steel guitar into that world. We are seeing more and more of this. Perhaps we should thank Robert Randolph, but I think it's because more and more artists are realizing what a great instrument we play, and want that sound in their bands.

The genie is out of the bottle, and more and more people are seeing how beautiful she is.

I think the future of the pedal steel guitar lies not so much in country music, but with singer/songwriters and soft rock artists like Elton and Leon.

So, thank you, both you guys. you are doing us all a big favor.

It was on PBS last night,I missed the first half,Russ sounded great as did everyone else.

Mike, (or anyone else) what network will that show be replayed on this Sunday, I have most of the channels mentioned above and I ought to be able to find it somewhere, sounds worth recording.

I'm guessing it was Jay Bellerose.

I remember seeing Russ Pahl and Steve Hinson all the time at the open mics and jams in Nashville I think 1990-91. Both guys simply blew me away with their awesome steel sounds and Tele sounds. And I remember the Formica Caster too. LOL. Its great they got the good gigs over the years cause they certainly deserved it with their incredible heart and soul. Was so exited to see them both a few years ago in my neck of the woods. Russ with Vince Gill and Steve with Randy Travis. Great studio AND road pickers. I remember when that wasn't allowed and I never understood why. Best of luck to you 2 guys

Been watching Electric Proms at the Roundhouse in UK with Elton John and
Leon Russel, plus Steel player Russ Pahl (I think) Elton mentions him at one point
The show over here appears to be on channel 301 (Freeview) and is on some sort
of loop! as the numbers and interviews keep repeating! Does give you a good chance to record the numbers RP is on!
Not much use to you lot in the USA but to get any pedal steel with high profile
musicians over here on the 'box' is gold!

Along with his talent, I'm sure he fits in and is what they wanted. I agree, Johnny Cox would have been good too...

Jay Bellerose is indeed the drummer. I had the pleasure of working with him in studio a few months ago- I don't usually think 'breathtaking' when I hear drums. Great concert, thanks for sharing the link.
