I just noted that I had very little drop (less that -1). The question I have is I tuned my Fessy according to a thread here that doesn't tune straight 440. When I tune the way suggested and I leave the steel overnite it returns to 440 on every string. Does anyone have any idea why? Bob |

Strings heat up when you play them, thus expanding a little.
This and stretching are why you usually have to tune up not down occasionally.
Also, the gradual stretching of the string is always happening very slowly when under tension.
Temperature differences will affect this too.
Some folk slack the strings a bit on 6 string guitars stored for long periods.
It may help to maintain the strings as well as keeping neck warping to a minimum.
Some guitars just hold tuning better than others.
I cant explain why other than maybe really good solid machine heads, properly tensioned return springs and good strings.

Thanks Clete. I just got the Fessy about a month ago. It was used 2006-7. It looks like they may be new because of the way that they are wound on the tuning heads. They stay where they are tuned to now. Bob |

Ive had my Fessenden for almost a year come November. Its been thru a lot of configurations, and Im not sure what year it is actually. I cant find a number on it, though maybe there was one on the endplate inside I missed when I completely took it apart to clean the changer a while back.
I got it from Mike Perlowin as a C6 4X2. The Uni 8X5 parts I eventually figured out (very educational) and it was pretty tricked out. I really like the Uni setup, but the Ext E9 setup was one I was curious about since I play mostly E9 (though Im quickly picking up C6 since getting a D10). I really like the Ext E9 setup too as a 5X5 now. Its a little more stable tuning wise I think in part because those low Uni notes are more hysteresis prone to coming back sharp than the Ext E9 low notes on the 11th and 12th strings. Theres also a little less that can go wrong. Its still the least stable tuning-wise in my little stable o' steels. Generally I think 10 string necks (either S10, SD10 or D10) may hold tuning a little better than 12, but specifically, no two guitars are the same right?
