What is the main cause of string rattle?

Hi Weldon, I would say if it's near the nut then it's probably due to uneven string height. Changin out one or two strings to a different gauge to even them out some can help to remedy the problem. You can also exert a little more downward bar pressure near the nut.

I have a couple of strings where the rollers rattle at the nut really bad.

Lack of properly gauged nut rollers.

Again, again and again:
"My all time number one pet peave". Nothing irritates me more, when it comes to our beloved instrument.
Last evening I sat down to a brand new $6600.00 guitar; and one of the highest rated PSG's out there, and sure enough, same ole, same ole. With moderate bar pressure at fret 1 on the C6 neck, several strings rattled badly. And it took not just a little bar pressure to stop it. But I had to exert considerable pressure; which to me causes needless fatiguing of the left hand.
Why PSG manufacturers have not taken this seriously; and SOLVED the problem once and for all beats me.
Oh well!
After living with the problem for over 60 yrs, I am convinced that the ONLY way to truly cure it, is to have infinitely adjustable nut rollers. Whereby, a player could stop it instantly by simply adjusting a setscrew on TOP of the guitar just to the left of the nut roller housing. (viewed from behind the instrument). One screw for each string of course.
The following is two different ways it could be done. Albeit using rollers, in the second case.
Note: what appears to be a double row of adjusters is a reflection off the aluminum nut roller housing.

has anyone ever made a pedal steel with a locking nut like guitars with floyd rose tremolos have? seems like it would solve this problem but might introduce others.

I have gotten a couple sets of gauged rollers from Don Burrows and have been very happy.
Small investment for a good return.

I love Carl's idea......I hope the steel manufacturers pick up on this one....... Definitively needed.
