Jeffran is very well established and well respected in the steel community. I'm a big fan of the Right Hand Alpha course!
One nice thing about the forum is that you can probably re-sell and get most of your $$ back if you don't like a particular course (subject to the forum rules, of course - read here: http://bb.steelguitarforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=118192 ). Not too much risk involved. |

His stuff is designed to get you up and playing today. He doesn't go into theory too much, which may be good or bad, depending on your view of theory. |

I say Tomato, and you say Potato. I've used Jeff's courses since he started writing articles in Peavey Monitor magazine years ago, which is part of what got me started on Steel in the first place. I think the first one was titled Pedal Steel for Six Stringers. I even spent a week with Jeff 1 on 1 at his Top Gun school for pedal steel and in my personal opinion, he was all about theory.
Jeff's teachings are all about scales, and substituting chords and what you can "get away" with by playing less and making it sound like more. He taught how you could play only 3 chords in a 6 chord song and no one would ever know. He taught it in a way that simplified it, sure, but it is Music Theory all the same. I remember in one of his early articles he closed it by saying "There, I've just cheated some college out of 4 years of Music Theory".
Forgive my pouncing on this but I don't think it's fair to say that Jeff Newman didn't go into theory much. Someone might take offense.
For Dan M. Yes, the courses are very much worthwile, and they always will be.

Let's just agree to disagree. I spent 4 years in college studying music theory (both classical and jazz) and I also worked through all of Jeff's C6 material and I stand by my statement.
I'm not saying it's a bad thing - that stuff got me playing C6 on the bandstand in a matter of days - but he doesn't get into the "why" of it as much as the "how" of it. Different strokes, as they say. |
