I am a newbie PSG player. I was wondering if there is anyone around Chicago who I could go watch live or take a few lessons? Thanks!

Joel Paterson with The Western Elstons. He also has a band Joel Paterson and Modern Sounds where he plays mostly guitar.

Hey Jim, I'm not close to Chicago but I did play in Chicago Heights yesterday.
I don't know where you live up there, but if you feel like taking a long drive
down RT1 you can always come spend a day with me, and I'll get you started.
I'm not great, but I love to help others get started, and I never charge anything.
I have a friend that drives down once a week from just south of Chicago, for a lesson.
Then we jam the rest of the day. She play's piano and her husband plays rythym guitar.
If I can help you any, just give a holler. :) :) :)

Check out Brian Wilkie, he plays with a band called the Hoyle Brothers, and I think he has a regular Thursay night gig, but I can't remember the name of the place ( maybe Crawdaddys? ). Also, T.C. Furlong plays out occasionally. Both Brian and T.C. are great players.

Hello James,
I play steel in Chicago all the time. Mostly with a group called Van Ghost, no current dates booked with them. I will be playing the Metro on 10/16 with Joe Pug.

Like everyone says Brian Wilke is the man. Go see him at the Empty Bottle and he give lessons. That's what I did 6 years ago.

Thanks everyone...

James,

I second or third the nomination of Brian Wilkie. He's the one that taught me. He's a really great teacher and player. His gig with the Hoyle Brothers is at the empty bottle every friday 5:30-7:30, his thursday night gig is at Smokedaddy with Urban Hog Wrangler, but as far as I know he's pretty much just playing guitar on that gig nowadays - well worth seeing, however. He plays with Urban (of Urban Hog Wrangler) at Honky Tonk BBQ in Pilsen every tuesday night (not sure if he brings the steel to that gig or not..... I play a decent amount, too, if you want to come out sometime. I'm at the California Clipper next Friday and NYE, and I will be at Honky Tonk BBQ next Saturday. You should definitely go see Rocco if you can, too. Good luck.

Hey James, I'm playing in Northbrook at Hanson Brothers on Saturday night (Dec 4th) with John McHugh and band. John is an awesome fingerstyle guitar player. Not much country but we all get a workout playing classic tunes. Beatles, Spirit, Allman Bros., Fleetwood Mac. CSN, etc. John lets me play steel all night :)
If you're free, come by and say hi.

There's a guy somewhere in the Chicago area named Mark Lee. I use to watch him back in the late 70's here in Minneapolis. He was in a small 3 piece group called Comfort Station. Mark had Buddy Cage nailed. Absolutely great player and very intertaining to watch. I saw him post here once and we emailed but now I have seemed to lost his email. Great player
