Have been here a while, lurking on this most fun site, and thought I'd toss up a link to a set I did recently, plugging/diving into the current. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iZFY5GgLGqo |

Very nice, William. Great technique -- very cool use of the volume pedal. I really enjoyed your singing and playing. Welcome to the SGF!
P.S. Let's get it out of the way now: so, tell us about your equipment -- pickup, amplification, etc. _________________ Peter

Oh, yeah, that equipment stuff. I bought that dobro at the only store in Ga that, in 1989, carried the Dobro line. (hello, Marietta) I had tried some resonophonic guitars in Athens, but they just sounded like cheap acoustics, so I made the drive, and the least expensive one they had, I think it's an F-60, sounded terrific, so I was in the game. Quickly added a Barcus Berry Dobro pickup, stuck it on and duct-taped the jack to the body. Runs through an Arion compression pedal, Maxon Tube Screamer and an Ernie Ball volume pedal. Then it's through, in this case, a Boogie Mark II B with a single 12 extension cab. But I use a Fender Deluxe Reverb and a Pro Junior a lot, too. It also has a McIntyre pickup that hooks up to the end pin, but that doesn't work too well with the amp. I started out with silver duct tape, but some years later found that duct tape comes in black, too. There was much rejoicing. Thanks for listening/watching/reading! |

Hello William and welcome to the Steel Guitar Forum,
I really love the sound you get on your reso. I've used that barcus-berry pickup, too, but never got it to sound quite as clear as on your video. Very nice, indeed. Like your chops, too, which conjure a little Chris Whitley or maybe even John Campbell.

Yeah man, that tone is great. Not overly lap steel-ish.
And welcome. I've also got an F-60S. Had a Beard upgrade done (bone nut, maple bridge w/ ebony saddle, quarterman cone), and it definitely made a difference. Also had the Mac Feather installed, but I found it to be underwhelming. Just mic-ing the dobro these days (so only play it in quieter settings), but I definitely need to look into that pickup you got. _________________ ***WARNING: the above commentary is probably Chris' OPINION, and therefore, he thinks he's right. |
