This Sunday, September 5th I will be doing my very best to fill the largest pedal steel guitar shoes in Northern CA. At the Sacramento Western Swing Society's monthly dance... I will be filling in for Bobby with the Howard Edwards western swing band.
On lead guitar will be the incredible Jimmy Baughman.. and the twin fiddles will be my old buds Olen Dillingham and Ronnie Elkan.
Music starts at 1:00, and this band will be followed by the amazing "Dry Creek Band" featuring Sacramento ledgenary steeler Hubert "Brownie" Brown... on his Sho~Bud Pro1 S-10 Universal (that's right, D9th/G6th).... this guy is the tone monster we all want to be !!!!
Tickets for the "Bobby Black Wannabe Dunk Tank" will be on sale... 3 balls for a dollar

Wish I could make it, Dave, but the "honey do" list is pretty long this weekend since we are prepping the place for the going away party of one of our daughters who is transferring to U.C. Irvine.
No problem, you're a fine player and you'll do great of course - but I would never think of the concept of actually replacing Bobby, that part of the equation just isn't possible!

Mark, thanks for the kind words and congrats on your daughter going to UC Irvine... I remember when my daughter was going to UC Davis... every time I saw the giant water tower for UCD by Highway 80 I figured I had paid for the last time it was repainted
.... oh yeah.. and truer words will never be spoken about what a treasure Bobby Black is to our steel guitar world... and beyond!!!
Richard.... oh those pesky paying gigs
... actually it's time I came and listened to your great steel playing again... been way too long my friend!!!

I still tell folks that the highlight of my pedal steel career was when Bobby Black filled in for me.

Some time in the last half of 1952, I think, Bobby Black left Shorty Joe in San Jose, Ca. to join the Blackie Crawford band either in Texes or Oklahoma,.
I was serving my time in the Army at Fort Ord, Ca. and Shorty hired me to replace Bobby for the week end dances at Tracy Gardens and the Balconades Ballroom. Bobby's brother Larry Black was playing lead guitar and we really became a great team. This made me first to replace Bobby Black !

Hey Billy.... 1952... let's see in 1952 my age was.....
oh never mind.....suffice it to say my mother had not even yet received her '61 Sho~Bud D8 PSG! ... and that's exactly what makes this forum such a special thing.... thanks b0b!!!
Thanks so much for the kind words Dave, my Bud!.... So ..... if you fill one shoe, and I fill one shoe.... and Chris Ivey fills one shoe.... oh forget it... we'll never get it done
... and that's what makes Bobby Black such a wonderful fellow to know... and to listen to
....one last thing...
I totaly forgot to mention that the drummer for us today was the really, really nice Biff Adams..... YES I got to play a 2 hour set with one of my personal idols....
oh hum... just another day in the life of a working steel man .... NOT!
What a ball I had!
