I just got an e-mail notice from a place called The Vacation Store about a cruise on May 3-7th on Carnival's Fascination. It is with the Ventures. The price is $548.00 and includes concerts, jam sessions, autograph and photo sessions, up close question and answer sessions, and a guitar clinic. Sounds cool. You can call 877 833-7640 for more information. There is plenty of time, so you can just WALK DON'T RUN to the phone. |

I saw Nokie Edwards at the NAMM show this past summer. Don't know if he's still pickin' w/ 'em or not. I believe the drummer,Mel Taylor, has passed away.

Smiley, you're right about Mel. He died in 1996 and was replaced as Drummer by his son Leon. He and I used to play together in a Country Band in Bristol, Va back in the 50's. He was one of the Good Guys. |

Hi George, I wish I could go, most people have no idea what a incredible guitarist Nokie Edwards is. I did a show with him and the Ventures in about 1981 in Rifle CO, and he blew me away. I had no idea from the Venture records that he was such an acomplished player, from country to rock to jazz, and a real nice guy too. I'm a BIG Ventures fan,& have several albums by them. One,being "The Ventures Play The Country Classics",which includes the dreaded "Steel Guitar Rag". Also have one of their last albums that they recorded, which is autographed by all. The "NASA Commerative" album.
However,Mel was not the original drummer. On the first "Walk,Don't Run" album,Howie Johnson was the drummer. I often wondered if,when SUPER jazz guitarist,Johnny Smith wrote that song,he would've suspected that it would become the "R & R" hit that it did?
