Quite the improvement over the older model, which I owned and passed on to a pal. Love the P-90 they make. I have a PRS Agile copy with a pair of the most amazing P-90s, so I imagine this model sports something similar. Lost the P-Bass ashtray which made it fussy changing strings. The case is so awesome for the price point. Anyhoo, rant over. _________________ Sister Alexa>SX Lap Pro>Rocktron Surf Tremolo>Pignose 7-100.

Looks great but I would have hoped that they would have used a different bridge. I bought 2 of the SX's last February and the tune-a-matic bridges had problems. What I did was crank the saddles all of the way back in a straight line and then filled all of the empty space with carpenters white glue (to stop any kind of buzzing or rattling). The bridge did not sit in the mounting studs very well at all- it would rock back and forth which I believe decreases sustain. So I cranked the studs down until the front of the bridge was resting on the wood body, which required lowering the pickup (which is not something that you can do with P-90 Soapbars).
One way to upgrade the bridge would be to make the bridge itself from angle iron and then mount the strings through the body like on a tele. StewMac sells ferrules that go on the top of the body- it is pretty easy to find the ferrules that go on the bottom and hold the ball end of the string. It would be important to get the height of the bridge right since there are no adjustments for bridge or pickup height. However, you could add a metal shim under the angle iron bridge if it was too low. (I bought 6" x 18" steel sheets of 22GA and 16GA at the hardware store to make shims, etc.)
As for P-90 pickups it is usually very simple to swap out magnets to get a different sound, from ceramic to Alnico 5 to Alnico 2 or 3. All of those have their own tone and some work particularly well on a specific guitar (although what I usually do first is replace the stock Alnico 5 magnets with Alnico 2 for a sweeter tone).
BTW Did Rondo ever start selling their lap steel stands again?

I asked Rondo about the stands about a month ago and they said they would be available later this Fall. |
