So, the way I figure this is you get two or three steel guitar players together in a dimly lit room, everyone puts a hand on the bar and concentrates - and suddenly the spirit of Sol Hoopii rips into the 12th Street Rag at record speed, jerking the players' hands wildly up and down the strings ...
(And who among us couldn't benefit from a little supernatural intervention in our guitar playing?)

That looks very crazy, in a good way. Does the thing that points at the letters double as the steel? Is it made of glass?

Wow - I wonder if anyone ever has made a steel where the bar is attached to a sliding rack. It could be used like a sliding capo.

Greg - I had that idea too, to mount the bar on a sliding rack. That way you could actually play the guitar "backwards" with one hand only. Your picking hand doubles as your bar hand, as it rests on the slide and moves it up and down the string. I had the idea while I was holding my then newborn child with one hand and wanting to play with the other! 
Years later I came across a Youtube video of someone who had done just that, and added some kind of harp or keyboard-like thing into the mix that he played with his other hand. It was VERY impressive, but I cannot think of the right search terms now. I'll post it if I find it, it was very cool.

I like the concept of table top built in steel guitars.
I've been working on the local bar owner to let me install a "bartop" steel guitar. He built his bar top using a bowling alley lane laminate section. looks perfect for a built in steel guitar. I'd wire it into his radio/music system, perhaps an effects unit too. Fellow steel guitarist, Gordon Stone, and I meet there on occasion for a scotch. One or the other of us could entertain in trade for a pricy single malt. |
