It doesn't have anything to do with steel guitar, although the music of Django Reinhardt and Gypsy Jazz are pretty much unexplored by the world's most beautiful instrument.
Anyway, Birdland is hosting the 3rd annual event Nov 18 - 23.
This is scorching and soulfull music that is rapidly gaining recognition and appreciation in many parts of the world and in this country.
The line up is: Dorado Schmitt, Samson Schmitt, Ludivic Beier, and Alexandre Cavaliere from France & Belgium.
Joscho Stephan, Guntar Stephan, Maximillian Schaaf from Germany.
Brian Torff, long time bassist for Stephan Grapelli, and musical director.
Guest artists, Grady Tate, James Carter, Ken Peplowski, Enrico Granafe, Vitalli Imereli.
This is where you will hear the HOTTEST violins, saxaphones, harmonica, accordion, and guitars.
I've booked myself for 2 nights and will most probably book a 3rd evening. Anyone in the area who is interested, give me a holler. This is truly, amazing music and talent.[This message was edited by HowardR on 28 October 2003 at 03:02 PM.] |

I'd sure agree with you on Django's impact on jazz guitar. He came along when the guitar was not a solo instrument, especially in jazz and he really set the tone for others. And, he played much of his career after injuring his left hand, leaving only the first and middle finger. Anyone who plays six string can appreciate the difficulty of running these fast licks and runs with on two fingers.
I can't make the show, but I'd sure love to. |

Hi Howard
Nice line up there, but Birelli Lagrene is conspicuously absent.
And Tchavallo Schmitt would be a great addition, but he hardly ever leaves Alsace let alone goes to Paris, let alone the big apple.
My manouche band, Amicalement Swing, is playing Chez Oeuf ( Egg's Place) this Saturday. Not Birdland by any stretch of the imagination. But the food is better!
These guys would smoke us, as we are a new band, and they have been together decades in some cases.
But I wish I was gonna see this show.
To put a steel thing in this I have done 6 tunes with the Sho-Bud and 3 manouche guitars, and it was begining to come together. Not ready for this last minute booking, but getting there.
The one thing about this music it REALLY SWINGS, not just a collection of riffing guitars...
If done right. You don't miss the drummers absense.
I have met Brian Torf a few times, fine player. And out main guitarist knows the Schmitts and Cavaliere I believe. But most of these guys are from the north east, and we are deep south.
But each year there is a spring time gathering of tziganes around here and they really play up a storm. |

Birelli Lagrene along with Frank Vignola, Jimmy Rosenberg, and the late Babik Reinhardt played the very first Django Fest. They change the line up as much as they can each year.
They will also be holding a workshop during the day on Nov 23. |

I saw Birelli at the Bottom Line about 10 years ago.
A total pickup band and borrowed guitar, 3 hours off the plane and his guitar lost.
He was great, in spite of the BS that day. |
