I received mine yesterday and had ordered it at the show for $40.00 (I think). This E9th video has sections on Paul's setup, a short section on pickblocking, chiming, counterpoint harmonies, pivoting (keeping one note constant while moving others around), and solo phrasing. It provides a welcome addition to any steel player's arsenal of weapons to be used. From a strictly personal point of view, I would have preferred the addition of tab instead of the note by note description of each section and using the tape for more lesson material- who wouldn't want to hear more from this obvious master? Again this is a personal take and I imagine that there are equal numbers of us that prefer no tab. The good thing is that this is Part 1 of E9th Concepts leading me to believe that there is more to come!

I take it that Paul didn't pursue the DVD option he was considering - I was hoping he would.

Did anyone ever get any resolution on how/where to order this video? I presume it's through the same PO Box as his old courses, but am surprised there's no description or promotion of this new video anywhere..?

[y'all think we can talk Paul into getting his website updated soon..? friendly wink & nudge : ) ]

The section on pivoting would alone be worth the cost of the video. I hear Mr. Franklin's work on Mark Chestnut's CD's and it drives me nuts trying to figure out what he's doing.

Please advise where and how to order this production & thanks.

Hello everyone,

It's great to hear good responses about the video. It is the first of a new series. The video format allows me to teach the way I would if I were teaching everyone individually.

The mission on this video was to teach more than just licks and melodies. I wanted to share my personal thought processes behind the musical ideas I play on the E9th tuning. Hopefully, if this lesson is successful, all of those who study it should walk away with something totally unique and unto themselves.

My website should be updated in the next few weeks. The video (VHF format only) is available now if anyone wants to order. Send $55 to the website address along with your return address.

Thanks,

Paul

Paul,

will this be made avilable on DVD or VHS PAL format in the future? Would be great, although I think buying an NTSC VCR just for this particular video might be worth it!

Clive,

I have not had a chance to figure out the difference in charges for Europe. Until I get the European prices up on the site I'll take care of the difference in shipping to all European orders.

Niklas,
Sorry, I have NO plans to release this on DVD. I don't have a clue what the market is for my instructional videos, let alone how many of which format to order. This is the reason why I chose to start out with the most popular format.

Sincerely,

Paul

5. October 2003,
Hi Paul,
I looked for rates at the US postal website www.usps.gov
and it looks like postage to Europe for one VHS tape (11 ounces or 300 grams) including envelope would be:
air mail letter approx. US$8.00 (6 days)
surface mail approx US$4.00 (6 weeks). No steel player could stand waiting 6 weeks, so air mail at $8.00 would be best.
---
As to VHS tapes:
The VHS tape itself is the same in USA and Europe. It is the recording method which is different.
In USA it is called NTSC, in Europe PAL.
However most new VHS machines (from the cheapest end at about US$100 to US$140) sold in Europe today can replay NTSC on European Television sets. I recently bought a new video machine (for spare) here for US$100.
---
I am looking forward to your video course.
Look in the mail for my bank check.
Kind regards,
Henning

do you need to have your guitar set up like pauls to use the video. it seems by the posts that is more of a perspective towards music and approachs he has, which would be cool.

I'm pleased to learn about your new release, Paul - I have little patience with mere 'lick-teaching' tapes. Given a little time and a reasonable 'ear', there's nothing that can't be dissected, whoever played it first!

But instruction in musical approach is quite another thing, and most welcome.

I do regret your decision not to pursue the DVD option, though - it's the medium of today and, one assumes, tomorrow. It doesn't sound to me as though any extra investment is required - it's just another format - surely the copying plants can reproduce the original in whatever medium you dictate?

These days, I'm going to have to REALLY want something badly before I buy it on VHS tape.

I just wanted to notify all of you who sent in orders last week that they should arrive today or at the latest Monday. The overseas orders should arrive by the end of next week.

I am having a difficult time coordinating my schedule with my website guy. Hopefully we can meet next week. Thanks for your patience.

Paul (and Darrell)
GREAT STUFF, guys
Well thought out and professionally presented. Very useful for anyone at the intermediate to advanced level and even some stuff that beginners could use. The pivoting / common tone stuff is presented in a way that allows the player to use it in many different applications.

We're ready for more.
Thanks again for a great lesson.

About two months ago I wrote an article on steel guitar instructional material. It was posted on a couple of places. I gave Pauls material a less than charitable grade based on his older material. We had a couple of email exchanges after which I added an addendum noting that the review was on older material. After reading these and other comments about his new tapes I have gone back to the sites and retracted my prior assessment and explained why. I now believe that it was not fair to offer negative assessment of a course ten years out of print. Paul is the cream of the crop and I am contstantly in awe of his playing.
Should I get the opportunity to view the newer material I will update the original article to reflect that.

I bought a lot of Paul's advanced speed picking and C6th tapes.I don't use one lick I learned from the tapes.I don't have to.He taught me the right pockets to make up my own licks and many ways to connect them. Also it helped me to understand many of the Buddy Emmons things I was already playing.I could play the licks but had no idea why some were in the pockets their in.Good stuff I thought.

As for video's I don't get why advanced players would need to see the licks being played.I copied Tommy White's video to cassette.Much easier for me than trying to run a TV remote.Maybe I'm missing something here.I've had the pleasure of watching Paul play several times in the last 20 years. He is a treat to watch. So for the guys who have never had the chance to see Paul work his fingers up close. It will be a treat.--------bb

Bobby, I agree with you about being able to get the licks from an audio recording just as well... There's something about actually watching a Master (or, for that matter, anybody) playing that communicates subtleties of vibrato, picking attack, bar control... and most of the videos I've seen also contain lots of material not included in the tablature, variations and so on that is often some of the juiciest stuff. Back in the 70's I learned more from watching B.E. play a set from the table right in front of him than I had from a year of listening to his records. I get some of that same input from well produced video. Can't wait to see Paul's new one!
