I was watching one of my Opry Video Classics DVD's, it was Carl Smith performing "Hey Joe", and became astonished with the song, and Johnny's steel playing...he was playing an early Emmons D10, and was playing on the C6 neck...I can't get those licks out of my head..what an awesome song and steel work

The sounds of Johnny Siebert.......motivated me to learn more and more about the steel guitar. Don Davis with George Morgan, Billy Robinson with Red Foley..... these were my early day mentors.
Jerry Byrd was simply too advanced for me and I had no idea how he could get all of that fabulous sound out of a six string lap steel.
Roy Wiggins was my first real exposure to a pro steel guitar player but no matter how I tried, I simply could not get HIS SOUND. I've experienced the same thing with Lloyd Green's great music.
Just remember......it was these wonderful musicians that lead the way for many of us that are now considered to be olde hat and over the hill. We didn't have access to instructional courses, tableture, cassette tapes and CD's.
I tip my hat to each and everyone of them. |

Brandon, locate the original cut of Carl Smith's, Hey Joe (it's on you tube also).
I was told by a reliable source that Johnny Sibert (he spells his last name S-I-B-E-R-T) played a Fender Dual Pro. eight with trap pickups on that original cut.
I'm sure it was recorded before the Stringmaster debuted.
Johnny Sibert exemplifies the "Fender steel guitar sound" more than anyone I've heard to date.
..fabulous treble tone on steel guitar on this Carl Smith song. |

Johnny is one of my favorites for sure! I can remember those old Opry shows back in the 50's very well. He was my favorite "TV" player. Little Roy Wiggins was my favorite "radio" player from listening to Eddy Arnold's radio show. I not only liked Johnny's playing I liked his tone. I love those old Carl Smith records! |

Hey Joe was recorded in May 1953.
I'd always assumed it was a Fender, but he also had these critters early in his career:

I can remember when the song first came out, Bobby Garrett worked it up and showed me the licks. Johnny was a favorite of mine and Bobby. Jody. |

Notice there are only 4 pedals, it would be interesting to know the setup on both necks. Still got the Fender-ish tone. Johnny and Carl, what a team. _________________ Bill Ford S12 CLR, S12 Lamar keyless, Misc amps&toys Sharp Covers

yes, Mike, that is the one I am talking about....notice how he talks about Johnny getting it from Shot Jackson and that "it was half price"....do you think it was because it was an Emmons? I know Shot always called them "Brand X" I can watch this over and over...I love it! |
