I am currently running 'Orange blossom' at 155 BPM On 'Steel' and 'Strat', in a band situation which is kicking along quite nicely. Speed chops limited. Fiddler finishes out about 165 BPM or so.
On the E vamp, just like everybody else we all do our own thing. I tend to throw in the 'Harmonic minor, Chinese tune, diminshed scale and a bunch of horn whistle's etc.

Question;
When that song was written [trad isen't it]was there a specific number of bars on the E vamp before going into the A/D/E/ section??
I know most players, drummers, just wait for the 'horn toot' never had a problem with that, but i was just wondering what everybody else's opinion is of that.

Specific set 'bar count' or just 'rumble in the jungle'?

After both playing and listening to this song for many years, it appears that the only rule for the "E" vamp is that there are no rules except the ability of the person playing it (check out Mark O'Connors version on the "New Nashville Cats" CD. for a prime example where while playing the vamp, he actually works in an imaginative arrangement of the theme from the Flinstones among other things.

Larry,

Myself being a fiddle player first, I have always preferred less of a hang on the E section, but know other fiddlers liked more. As you mentioned, there's "the cue" the other band members recognize when the fiddle player wants to move on. Personally I'd follow the fiddle-player's thoughts (does that sound biased or what?) and follow his version.

Very Happy

Thanks fellows for your replies.

Hearing where it's going is not a problem, it hasen't been a problem, i was just wondering if the song had a set amount of bars, vs just rumbling around machine gun splatter in the jungle.

I throw in Arabian/chinese/gothic licks and blow all the chops i know at that speed, [Strat no problem, wail all night, Pedal Steel, i'm spent in no time] and i think i'm running around 24 bars or so before the 'Horn toot' which everybody is comfy with runs about 45 seconds i suppose as a guess. NO set 'bar count' the same, the drummer does not count bars, neither do i, THE CUE is all there is

I have heard 20 minute versions and 5 minute versions and i have never heard the same set-up twice, basically you vamp E, blow mega chops for a while until your all spent, you then give the 'horn toot' and away we all go again, so i dont think there is a set 12/24/16/32 bar E vamp for sure?
Thanks also dave nugent and dave simmons, i agree!
Phew, looks like i been doing it right for the past 20 years. Laughing

Was there words to this song? Johney cash version the only one i ever heard?

Charlie, hows that M.S.A doing after all these years?
