I'm looking at two steels right now. GFI expo s-10 and a Becks instrument s-10 http://www.steelguitar.net/others3.html
http://www.steelguitar.net/expo1.html
I'm going to be in Nashville next month and i thought it would be good if i could sit down at a steel to see what feels best. I've had recommandations to buy from Bobby Semour. What do you guys think? Is there anyone else you guys recommend in the Nashville area or close by. I only have $1800 to spend maybe I'll get something. I've set down at some of my friends steel's and i like s-10's the best. |

Devon,
This question will always get you lots of different opinions. One of the best moves you can make is to visit a store like Steel Guitar Nashville where you can sit down and actually try several different makes and models.
Thre are only two store that I know of on the east coast where you can do this, Steel Guitar Nashville, and Billy Cooper's Music in Orange, Virginia.
Bobbe Seymour can play the different guitars for you if you want to see what they sound like, and you can try them out to see if they "fit" you in terms of pedal feel, knee lever spacing, etc.
Either the GFI of the BMI is a good guitar, and Bobbe may have some other options for you when you get there. I have seen single ten Carter professional models in your price range, and the older MSA Classic models that have the aluminuim pocket around the pickup are good guitars that are often inexpensive.
Good luck in your quest!

You will find something really nice in that price range. You have already overcome the beginners biggest mistake by being willing to part with significant cash. I would also advise buying your first nice guitar from a steel store, as you don't know what to look for. Money well spent IMHO, unless you have a friend who really knows what he's doing, or a teacher who can help. Others will have other opinions, but I'm two years in and am just feeling comfortable checking out guitars.
You are lucky if you can go into a store and try things out. I bought my EMCI from Jim Palanscar based on my teacher having been in his shop and playing it. I guess it was probably the best way in hindsight as I was pretty clueless at the time. Still am for that matter.
Don't test drive the Corvette you have no hope of paying for. |

My first one was made by Bob Simmons - a Simmons Genesis. It is actually a very good 3X4 PSG for about $1000. You will have plenty of money left over to buy a Nashville 112. Bob lives in Trafford Alabama about 35 miles north of Bham. Google his Simmons Pedal Steel. _________________ Show Pro SD10 guitars

Also, the Jackson Blackjack or Blackjack Custom is perfect for any level on steel. And, there's also a Jackson UltraLite model too. David and Harry Jackson build those steels. They're S-10s for sure with great sound.

I want to say thank you to everyone, your advice has truly been taken in. I can't wait to begin my path to a wonderful life of steel. I've been playing a lap steel for 20 months and now want to try the pedal steel. |

I bought a Carter Starter, had it for a couple of years, and then moved up to a Jackson Blackjack. There is now doubt in my mind that the Blackjack is one of the best all around deals available, in that you get a very well built professional instrument for a decent price which sounds great, plays very easily, and with 4 knee levers & e pedals, it's all you really need. _________________ LAST WEAK I CUDN'T EVEN SPELL "STEAL GIT-TAR PICKUR" & NOW I ARE WUN! |

I stop in Bobbe's shop every time I'm in Nashville. That's definitely the very first thing you should do. He's always excited to help out a new player and he'll beat any price around (and probably tell you some awesome stories at the same time.)
If he'd just put in a bar room, I don't think I'd ever leave. _________________ www.facebook.com/brettrobinsonmusic

I've never been, but just watching Bobbe's videos makes me wanna go there! LOOK AT ALL THOSE STEELS!!
And he's funny, should be in the Hall of Fame; a guy I'd love to meet, let alone buy a guitar from! Prolly have to kick me out too Brett
Devin,
I wish there were a place like his around here when I started. I dont think you could be in a better place to get advice on a steel, and try them before buying.
