Hi Jim,
The report will far exceed the "hype" leading up to "MASSBASH". It's 2:15 A.M., as I write this message, and I promise a full report on this very positive show of shows, after a few more hours of sleep. You would have enjoyed the show. The talented musicians provided all of the entertainment that was promised. Thanks for the inquiry.

In the meantime, I'll just say it was great. I'm amazed at the amount of talent west of Springfield! And what can I say about Buzz Evans! Awesome doesn't tell it! I'm sure Bill Hankey will come up with a whole "passel" of better descriptives.

Someone who knows them all will have to say what a great job all the performers did, but in light of the recent threads about there not being enough jazz played on steel, I just have to say "WOW!" about Jim Cohen and Mike Ihde (how can that be an E9 tuning?!) just wailing with the great Buzz Evans (and a rhythm section* who were obviously happy to get out of 1st gear for a little while)!

Buzz Evans' performance was worth many times the price of admission. Add that to 12 additional players shown in the original "MASSBASH" report, and the attendees were enjoying an honest dollars worth of entertainment. Jim, the entire show was solid entertainment. I'll just throw in highlights from time to time, to provide you with a picture of what came down. Jim Roule ordered a new FESSENDEN while at the show. Jim Cohen amazed me once again, during his faultless performance. Dana Flood is still another tremendous talent who takes no prisoners. His sound is untouchable. Doug Beaumier introduced his standup version of pedal steel guitar, and his bright distinctive tones were well received. Doug played a single ten Emmons for his set. Jim Roule broke into The "Orange Blossom Special" at break-neck tempo, and kicked it up to the fastest version I've ever heard. Mike Ihde played pedal steel at the show, as well as lap steel, guitar, and bass guitar.
We are very honored to feature Mike Ihde, and we are beholden to him for his musical expertise. Chris Brooks brought with him a very enjoyable selection of music that opened the gates to a more diversified field of musical studies. Thank you Chris, it's good to know you're back in New England.
I'll pick up on the other performers shortly: Pete Adams, Sammy Gibson, Frank Caruso, and Jeff Demaio, in the next reply.

It was incredible. First time I've ever been to an all steel show, and not the last for sure. It was fantastic to see so many different musical styles, and different techniques and approaches... and just great players all day long, culminating with Buzz Evans, who definitely made my jaw drop slack for about an hour at least.
Thanks to all who played, and to all who put it together, it was a great experience, and much appreciated. |

I'll be going to the ITAM Lodge on
Pontoosuc Lake, Sunday evening to be entertained by The "DOOLEY AUSTIN BAND". I've followed the group faithfully for a number of years. PETE ADAMS is the steel guitarist in their group. Both Pete and guitarist BOBBY SWEET JR. were participants in the 21st ANNUAL "MASSBASH". RICK LEAB is always my pick for house drummer. RICK, DOREEN MICKLE, and JODY LAMPRO together as a group, provide the entertainment that I look forward to hearing. Doreen is the featured vocalist. Vocalization is shared by all members. PETE ADAMS is very knowledgeable in the art of playing steel guitar. He has a broad interest in activities that pertain to steel guitar advancement.
Bassist, Tim Kole filled in for DOOLEY'S bassist, JODY LAMPRO. M.C. COREY ZINK did a great job introducing the steel guitarists. Corey is the bandleader in the "CANNONBALL EXPRESS" band.

Indeed, a great show, and every player and combo offered something unique. Country, jazz standards, be-bop, it was all well represented. And it was clear the audience had a great time, very appreciative. A beautiful day all in all. Thanks Bill and everyone who took part.

The show was fantastic. It gets better every year. I missed the first few performers, but I did hear Jeff DeMaio playing twin and 3-part swing stuff with Scott Tyler and Fooch(sp?) and their band Gunsmoke. They've been together for years and they have some great harmony parts worked out.
Jim Cohen had a nice tight jazz combo with Buzz Evans on guitar, Mike Ihde on bass, and Rick L. on drums... what a sound.
Buzz Evans was incredible. He's like the energizer bunny... he just keeps going and going and going.
The show was well attended and the audience payed close attention to the performances and responded with lots of warm applause.
Much thanks to ALL of the great performers who travelled so far for this celebration of steel guitar in the Berkshire hills.

I want to extend my thanks once again to Bill and Beth Hankey, and everyone else who helped to make this year's Mass Bash a huge success. It was a terrific show! I am continually amazed at the quality of the performers in the New England area; as good as you'll hear anywhere else in the country. And the show just keeps getting better and better each year. I'm proud to be a part of it and especially thrilled to have had Buzz Evans playing guitar on my set. I'm already looking forward to next year's Bash.

I expected no less than a great show.I can understand Bill being tired Sunday night.That was a pretty heavy schedule of musicians to set up on stage for Just one days performance. Now rest up 364 days and look forward to #22.

Thanks for the kind words Doug.
This was my first time attending and playing at the Mass Bash and I enjoyed myself very much. I was able to put faces with a lot of names I've heard over the years in the CT & MA area. For those of you who haven't gone to a Mass bash you should make your plans for one in the future - I can't see how you would be disappointed.
