hi all,. was wondering if anyone knows where to get a (preferably vintage) stackpole 3-way selector switch for my 1939/40 national new yorker? ebay the only way?

Hi Christiaan,
It would probably be helpful if you post a photo of the exact component you need. Is it a 3-way selector switch (as on the late 1930s three pickup New Yorkers) or is it a 3-way "tone mode switch" as on most subsequent models?
The former I am familiar with, and it is a purely mechanical contraption (a knob with three fixed positions that engages different metal "tongues" for three different configurations for the multiple pickups).
The latter I assume is something connected to a pot (it has not got fixed postions, but turns smoothly like a pot, with three different tone control settings, all connected to the one pickup).

hi fred thanks for the reply...it is the latter unfortunately - its interesting you say it turns smoothly though (or should at least, i will pass that info on to the guy who is repairing mine) - it's a one pickup model .

Hi Christiaan,
The switches for 1-pickup New Yorkers I have played were the two models following yours: A ca. 1941 "war years" model and the subsequent 1947 variation of the New Yorker. So I am not 100% sure how your switch is supposed to turn - on the 1941 and 1947 ones it turned smoothly.

| Hi fred thanks for your reply. It's proving to be extremely frustrating trying to get this guitar working again! What I can't understand is how a switch that turns freely with no fixed positions like the 3 way selector can still make contact to use the different capacitors on "Hawaiian, chimes, harp " settings to get different sounds? |

That is something that does not make sense to me either, but it works that way. Perhaps Alan Brookes who is currently restoring a "war years" New Yorker can chime in about this?
