Does anyone know where I can find an online fretboard chart (various tunings -- preferably E) so I can learn the fretboard a bit better? I have only jammed on the lap steel for the past year (basically using the instincts I picked up as a rock guitarist) however,I would like to learn some quick, easy specifics. _________________ If Music Be the Food of Love, Play On. -Shakespeare

Go to TonalAlchemy http://www.tonalalchemy.com/index.htm The download price is $9.99. Enter any tuning that you want and you can print out the chart in either notes or intervals. Excellent value.
You can also use the same program for chords and numerous other instruments. I have been using it for years and would not be without it.
BTW I have no monetary interest in this software. |

I am a Mac user so I can't use this software unfortunately. I will likely seek out something for the Mac platform that is similar. _________________ If Music Be the Food of Love, Play On. -Shakespeare

I do think there is a great educational advantage of writing these types of charts yourself, by hand. |

Here is a chart made with Photoshop. It is simple to make by joining a few landscape format sheets together but Bill is correct when he advises making your own.
The beauty of this is that you can see it across the room whilst practising. (Being single now I can get away with a permanent display, married members may not be so fortunate )
I would also point out that the Tonal Alchemy program and the John Ely Chord Locator (specifically designed for steelers) both allow print outs AND they will retain any tuning that you wish to enter. |

Very cool idea! You guys are correct... I would clearly benefit from drawing it up myself; But as a guy with a young family I just don't get the time to be that ideal, so I admit I am looking for some shortcuts. _________________ If Music Be the Food of Love, Play On. -Shakespeare

I just made a chart for an 8 string B11th,it took me 7 minutes. I didn't use a ruler or a square, just the edge of a book,it ain't pretty, but it works. I have always found that writing something down seems to kick what is left of my brain into memorization mode. |

Cool. Did you copy it from a source or just write it out note by note?
Some of those charts confuse me a bit... like why are some of the circles in different colours? Still learning this stuff.... _________________ If Music Be the Food of Love, Play On. -Shakespeare

Look at your instrument and you will see dots (or some pattern) to help you quickly find the third, fifth, seventh and nineth frets hence I coloured in those frets on the chart. |

To make the 'poster' seen in my post above here are the jpegs for you guys who are short on time.
Six string http://www.box.net/shared/9kbay3i75z
Eight string http://www.box.net/shared/6t14j4vf52
Using Photoshop you can enter the notes and paste a few grids together or alternatively you can use a felt tip pen.
Have fun.
(BTW If you know a little bit about Photoshop it is not difficult to change the number of strings). |

Thanks so much! That's great. I work with Photoshop everyday so it should be a breeze. _________________ If Music Be the Food of Love, Play On. -Shakespeare

I just drew 8 [or 6] horizontal lines and 12 vertical. Numbered the verticals 1 to 12. Used a coloured marker for the note names, put them right over the intersection of the lines [cause I'm easily confused]. I have, on other charts I've made, drawn lines around the major and minor triads, slants included.Colour code them if you want. For me, it helps. |
