Hi guys and girls....

I just got hold of an old (193?) (what I think is a) Regal made Dobro but with a label I don't know anything about..... MARCIA...

Even Google doesn't know anything about that brand...

Any of you guys have ever heard about that brand.

It's got everything of Model 19.....

Cheers

The name Marcia is new to me, too. It looks like a studio brand, sold by a teacher. This was a student guitar.

From the catalogs and materials I've collected I can narrow down the model and year. You're right, it's Regal-made. But the Model 19 (1934-1937) had smooth-sided f-holes. This guitar, with the points on the sides of the f-holes, was called either a Model 25 (1937-1939) or a Model 27 (1939-1941). Dobro model numbers corresponded to list prices, which changed over the years. To avoid confusion with the better-known Model 27 from the mid-1930s -- the kind Josh Graves and Brother Oswald played -- I call this guitar a Model 25.

Thanx Tom

I already got a 27..... I mean some specs fit with the 37 but still.... probably a 27 in the end

From the inside...

The Marcia seems to be almost the same... My 27 has a terrific tone so I hope I'll get something like that with the Marcia. I guess it won't have the soundwell which my 27 has.

Cheers

Maybe someone stuck that neck on a Dobro.... Although, it does look very similar. My neck has a position marker at the 17th fret and of course the serial number on the end of the headstock. Routing looks the same. Does the tail piece look original?

I have what I thought was a Model 17, 1937, Regal made Dobro and the body looks identical. Same F holes. No soundwell but has sound posts. Lovely wood tone, not as loud as some but much sweeter. I bought mine from Gene Wooten. I wouldn't trade it for the world.

According to this web site,
Quote:
Oscar Schmidt Stellas with the "Marcia" peghead stamp means they were made for distribution in Canada.

Your guitar was probably made by Regal and imported into Canada. Regal made instruments for many different people, who then used their own labels.

Hi Brad

That is all I found googling around....
That website is pretty interesting...many many weird brands.

Anyway... I should receive the Marcia in a few days so I'll post some pics of the inside when I get it.

About Dobros... the more I search the more I discover variations in specs...

Cheers

Not really, I have a 1933 Dobro Model 19 but it has round holes in the cover plate and the plate is stamped with patent number that is registered to "Dopyera".

I think this is a Chicago Regal made instrument. I had a Nioma Dobro that was made by Regal and when doing my history homework I found they built instruments for other companies and I believe Marcia was another brand name they put on them. The Nioma sounded good . Hope this helps.

Hi

It's been a few months now since I got that guitar.
It HAS a WONDERFUL tone !! Brighter than the 27. No soundwell so the tone is a bit more "open" and wide. The 27 is kind of compressed compared to the Marcia.

So the spider is wider than on the 27. It's got that 14 marked near the birdge slot.

So here is a guitar that has a real Dobro tone you can get for little money !! At least, less than for most of the new korean made.

It's definatly Regal made.
