Las Vegas superpicker Buzz Evans will perform at the Mass Bash in Lee, Mass on July 20, 2003. There's some talk about this in the MASS BASH post, but I thought it was worthy of a sepatate post. Buzz played at the BASH about 3 years ago and he did a fantastic job! He plays great guitar and pedal steel, plus he's a fun guy to be around. My favorite Buzz lick is the "barking dog". I don't know how he does it, but he can get a "dog bark" out of his pedal steel... without effects.

Doug B.,

Indeed, Buzz Evans is the ultimate superpicker. His self-discipline has elevated the guitar, and steel guitar to new plateaus. He continues to popularize both instruments, and he will bring new musical experiences to those who are unaware of his unlimited abilities. Fellow musicians here in the East, as well as attendees of The "MASSBASH", will see Buzz Evans in performance on July 20th, at Berkshire Blues Cafe' in Lee, Ma. The "MASSBASH" will feature a day of STEEL GUITAR entertainment, which includes players who are best known, for their steel guitar artistry. Those who plan to attend, will be treated to the performances of the players listed in your "MASSBASH" post.

I've got a couple of Buzzie's CD's.

"It's A Hard Life" and "Mile Hi" (Live)
from Las Vegas.

For the life of me, I don't know why this great of the greats isn't bounced around more here on the Forum.

He plays straight up country, bluegrass, jazz
etc., you name it. And he has his own STYLE.
Undeniably.

I may be wrong on this, but I do believe on
"It's A Hard life", Buzz is doing all the lead guitar as well of course, steel.

Both CD's IMHO, are well worth getting and adding to your library.

I know I'll be up there in the Berkshires,
July 20th, very early.

And not to diminish from all the other gifted steelers playing this day, this sure is building up to be quite the hoot.

Looking forward to it.

Chipper,

You are so right! Buzz is one of the "all-star" musicians of our day. Most of his great performances in recent times, have been enjoyed, west of the Mississippi; in Las Vegas, Nevada. He has been touring in some of the surrounding western states this year, keeping up with a busy schedule. Buzz will display cassette and CD recordings at The "MASSBASH" for those who wish to add his recorded music to their collection of instrumentalists.

Hi Guys...

As is the normal for me, I have over committed myself throughout the summer and have a couple gigs booked that day.

I would love to come hear Buzz play live as he's been a favorite of mine since the Dick Curless stuff he did many years ago.

Chipper, you're right... the CDs are great.

Doug and Bill... hope you folks are well.

Bill, are you doing the Les Ogden jam this year ?? I think I have a gig with "The Commander" that date.

Tiny,
Would that be "THE COMMANDER", as in "Lost
Planet Airmen"? I heard he was now living close-by in upper state New York.

Would you happen to know of Otto Zapitone?
A long-time friend of the Commander's.

Otto is a decent piano player, but, like many of us - works. He's a longtime fisherman
and friend - Chatham, Cape Cod.

When Cody played at the big arena in Yarmouth
back in 1973, Otto had all the band, including Bobby Black, out to a mutual friend's farm for an after hours jam, that I'm glad I never missed.

This was Friday night. On Saturday night's
concert, and a long day of Otto
and band fishing the high seas, Otto ran up on stage and presented about a 30 lb. cod
to The Commander - who promptly leapt up from the piano and French-kissed the cod.

Touching.

Sure miss that era - CCATLPA were really picking up steam at this point. (Gee-hope
that's who you mean?).

Chipper:

Yup... it would be "The" Commander Cody and his LPA. A fun gig when I get the call. The band is much smaller now than back in the 70s and they don't always use the steel due to cost factors. But when they do, it's a blast. Great guys in the band plus George of course, who is still the same and cool.

John Widgren, Don E. Curtis, Bobby Black and myself share duties depending upon the gig location.

That's a good story and as a fanatic for fishing, I love it !!! Those were the days.

While I worked for Gene Watson we went out on a deep sea fishing trip. I had a good time but it was very rough and Gene got sick and turned green as the ocean. It wasn't a pretty sight.

Sure would like to get to see and most of all hear Buzz this summer. He's very cool !!

Chris O.,

Thanks for the information, and for sharing parts of your colorful past. I saw Gene Watson some time ago, on a George Jones Tv special show, and I saw a coolness in him that stood out from all the rest.

Yes, I will play at Les Ogden's family picnic show this summer. You made a believer out of me, the year that you entertained for the Ogden family, and friends. I'm sure that Les will have his new steel for the show. There is something about the friendliness, and the pavilion, that attracts me year after year.

If your bookings should cancel for any reason, it would be great to see you on the day of the "Bash".

Doug,

39 more days, and counting before what could very well be the largest concentration of super pickers to enter Berkshire County for the entire year. Especially the steel guitarists who will be converging en masse to the designated location in Lee, Ma. (Berkshire Blues Cafe) on July 20th. The event will feature 14 scheduled steel guitarists, and a superb backup band. I hope to see those who are able to attend and enjoy all of the excitement of the day.

Myron L.,

Thanks for the latest news on Joe Casey's activities. There is a well defined slump in my ability to track his whereabouts of late. Joe has been a huge contributor in helping to relay the Mass Bash programming over the years. This year the word is getting out, thanks to a major news source near New York City. It's The P.S.G.A. Inc., namely, and that organization is recognized as the parent Annual Steel Guitar Show of the Northeast region. I believe the membership exceeds one thousand, at the present time, and continues to enjoy new welcoming status, as we move forward with the passing of time. Nothing is more disheartening than hearing from someone after a show, that they regret not attending, caused by lack of communication.

Thanks Myron, for helping to alert fans of the great steel guitar performances, that will be shaping up soon, at the Berkshire Blues Cafe', on Route 102, in Lee, Ma., on Sunday, July 20th.

Country Joe Casey,

Thanks again for your continued support. I can assure you that all of the ingredients are on the counter, to produce a spectacular steel guitar show. Our backs are bent, and we will be leaning into our best efforts, realizing that the 21st Mass Bash, has the potential to excel anything that flies, walks, or swims, on a country platform, here in Berkshire County.

The "MASSBASH" is just over 2 weeks away!!! We'll be pulling all the stops to most assuredly maintain a high level of entertainment throughout the afternoon. A jam session will follow the scheduled 14 players who will play sets of 30 minutes. The steel guitars will be pushed to their limits, and we expect a very receptive attendance to bolster up the performances on our very special day.

Doug,

Inquiries are mounting, as the good news of the "Bash" is reaching those who recognize, that we are striving to do our best to feature the steel guitar's unlimited entertainment capabilities.
