I've been experimenting with a Kayton Robert's C6/A7 tuning; AAC#EGACE low to high. Its great and I like it alot, it compliments the high E13 (BDEG#BC#EG#) on the front neck very well. My problem is that the intonation on the lowest A is way off. I'm using a regualar D'Addario wound 66. Right now by the time I get much above the 12th fret, The low low A is almost 1/2 step sharper than the other two A's in the tuning. What string should I be using?

It sounds huge especially with both the neck and bridge pickups. The guitar is an old D8 Guyatone with gold foil pickups and a 24 inch scale.

I think there is not enough tension with an .066 string. You might want to get a little heavier with an .072. That should help with this issue somewhat. I think you'll always be putting a little extra pressure on that string because it sits higher in the nut and doesn't make for an even plane across the strings.

Is that a typo or are there two low A strings in that tuning side-by-side. If so, why; or to put it another way, how are the two A strings used?

I suspect the eighth sting A is an octave below the seventh string A, as used by Jules Ah See and Duke Ching in the song "Sand". I also believe it is used open, rather than with the bar.

That makes sense, hence the recommendation of such a heavy string.

The JB C6/A7 is tuned Lo-to-Hi:
Lo-A~C~C#~E~G~A~C~E and his B11 is tuned: Lo-B~A~C#~D#~F#~A~C#~E. And you can also tune to E9. The Gauges I use for all these tunings are:
[C6/A7] [B11] [E9]
E .015p E .015p E .015p
C .018p C# .018p B .018p
A .022p A .022p G# .022p
G .024w F# .024w F# .024w
E .030w D# .030w E .030w
C# .036w C# .036w D .036w
C .038w A .038w G# .038w
Lo-A .070w Lo-B .070w Lo-B .070w The main Basic-Tuning is the C6/A7. Of course the scale I'm using is 22½”. According to Chris Scruggs, a Flat-Wound .065 works well on #8.

I stock a Jagwire .079 stainless wound that should work pretty well for that low A, if it will fit in the tuner. It's a $4 string, though. Whoa!

On C6th pedal steel, the low C string has a pedal that lowers it to A and another that raises it to D. Most players use a .068 or .070. Myself, I don't use the low A note much because it feels too loose. Jagwire's .079 was developed for Randy Beavers's C6th neck, I think.

Herb Remington uses a low A string on his pedal steel, too. I'm not sure what gauge.
