Before I ventured into the world of dobro I played a Regal 52 Black Lightning in a local shop, which I found bright and lively.
Instead of buying it I purchased a PBSM which is a Goldtone/Beard solid mahogany instrument. It has a nice dark sound which I like, but lately I'm wondering if I might also enjoy having a dobro with a more "traditional" brighter, wiry sound.

My first choice would be the Regal 52, of course, since I liked it before. Are there others in this low-to-mid price range that anyone would recommend?

Is it possible that something is awry with the setup on my PBSM? It originally had the Beard shop setup, but it may have been altered before I bought it (used) and I installed a (K&K) pickup myself, though I didn't notice any change in the sound at the time.

Thanks!

Mike,
I have no idea what your two Guitars sound like, you should post a sound file so we know what to compare with.

Anyway, here is what my cheap SX sounds like.

James,

thanks for the clip. I'll have to forward it to my wife's computer to hear it as mine is "challenged" in that respect at the moment.

I figured the Beard and Regal guitars are pretty well known by many on this site.

I should also be clear that I'm thinking in terms of a budget in the 500 to 1200 dollar range, and I'm not shy about buying used (I generally prefer it, actually).
