One thing in Bobbe's newsletter today that I I'm not completely in agreement with. While the steel can lay out completely in a large show band, in a 4-5 piece group I feel the steeler needs to contribute to the rhythm. One player at a time playing fills, but the PSG is a powerful instrument for enriching the sound. Simulate a string section, play horn section stabs or riffs, or just chords on the offbeat.

There was a recent topic on the use of tremolo on pedal steel. I think a wide variety of effects are useful when playing background. Whatever suits the arrangement. Lay down a "pad" like a synthesizer, etc.

Feel free to disagree.

Rich, I totally agree with you, what is the misunderstanding? Possibly I didn't make it clear that it does depend on the flavor or the tune, and the taste of what is going on as to what is trying to be accomplished.

Yes, I have had many great producers tell me to play pads in places, and many MORE tell me to lay totally out in the same places. It still boils down to overall taste, but a good rule is to err on the side of simplicity.

I have wanted to add things to many songs in many sessions over the years to just be told to "lay out". Remember, our ideas of good aren't always going to be in agreement with the producers. (or ever Ha!)

I still hate to hear a piano play rhythm with his left hand while he is filling with his right. This is a statement that most will have trouble understanding, but 45 years in the studios have made it pretty clear.

Thank you Bobbe

Bobbe, I appreciate your response. I was writing of live performance, and that is quite different from studio. In the few instance that I have done studio work on guitar, my playing was completely different from what I do on stage. Keep it simple, and then simplify further. On stage, unless it's a completely arranged and rehearsed gig, I listen to the sound and think what is needed, and try to add it. Orchestrating in the moment. (Sometimes, what is needed is silence.)

I definitely agree with you on piano players.

Rich, I totally agree with you in a live context, Yes. It would make a group sound much more full if the steel player did some nice tasteful pads while staying out of the way on many songs.

I used to get the news letter but Bobbe quit sending it to me. I sent him an E mail - no answer, maybe he is mad at me for some wierd reason, maybe he wants my Dachshund, "Gizmo". Anyway I"m pretty sure that I am going to pout the rest of the week, maybe even longer. Martin.

Tell Gizmo that Charlie, PeBe and "Rowdy" said hello, should have seen these little Doxie treading waterlast sunday. They seem to really miss the swiming today though. Funny how dogs make the best out of everything. Whoa!

It's interesting to compare Buddy's playing with Dicky Overbey's on the Ray Price classics that all those awesome singers in Texas have been covering for quite a while. Dickey is pretty busy, and plays a whole lot more notes than Buddy did on the originals, but both styles work exceptionally well.

So good to see your kickin', hope all the medical stuff went and is going well.

Dick Overby knocks my socks off. I could listen to him for days on end. He uses passing chords that make my head twist.
