I'm not insane. I just get upset when they take away my crayons. I use the large crayolas for a tone bar.

Thanks for the latest updates, Cal.

Working for Faron...Wow, I didn't realize it was that bad.

Thanks for the post about the amount of time you spent practicing when you were learning. That gave me a good perspective.

Thanks for stopping by my little blog, guys. I'm gonna continue making posts until I run out of ideas, and after 38 years of playing our beloved Confused instrument I've got a few more thoughts.

Cal, Jimmy Peppers who used to play golf with Faron calls him "Badge". Was that one of his nicknames or just a Peppers thing?

I don't know the one about the Oaks. Maybe Richard could tell us about that.
Faron was an honorary deputy in several police forces around the country because of some westerns he made (hence the Angie Dickinson anecdotes) where he played a sheriff, and he had a collection of badges.

Cal,

Great stuff. I like it when someone tells things like they are without sugarcoating. I envy you for being that close to him and seeing all this stuff happening first hand, and he's always been one of my favorite singers too. Smile

I find the internet fascinating, in that any goofus with a computer and an ISP can post anything and make it available on a forum or a blog for the whole world to read. And that same goofus, if he acquires even a small amount of technical know-how, can put up his own blog or web site, no matter how technically inept, and write about whatever, no matter how outrageous or mundane. This was just unimaginable a generation ago.

In your case, I'm thankful! A great mix of universal truisms (and many that echo my own sentiments so closely that it's startling) and out-and-out hilarity.

Keep it goin'! Smile

Hi Cal, love the page. I don't really follow any other blogs, but I think I worked out how to subscribe to this page so I get alerted whenever you update it: you register under the Meta heading on the right, once you've logged in you click "entries RSS" and subscribe there. Does that sound correct?

Thanks for your interest, Jonathan. Yeah, that works in most browsers, but not with Chrome/Mac yet. I don't think you have to register, though.

Grand Prairie, eh? I worked some of the clubs there with Faron.
Never heard that story, but it might be in the book. http://dianediekman.com/?page_id=27

Nice website and well-written blogs. Reminds me of the road years, for those who have never been on the road, that's it exactly.

I met Faron in Nashville, I think it was '79, I was playing steel with Buck Starr and Buck and the band were invited to the Grand Opening of Faron's new club, the Celebrity Ballroom, or something like that. Faron did a few songs with his band (that was probably you playing steel then, Cal?) and besides being the legendary Faron Young, he was also very funny in between songs.

The story of Little Jimmy Dickens and the guys playing catch with his Raggedy Ann doll reminded me of a hilarious story, maybe it's in the Stories section, of someone replacing the doll with a stuffed animal, Dickens didn't even notice until too late... if anyone knows where that story is it's a good one.

There are some things I miss about the road, and some other things about it I'll never miss... but I consider the experiences as invaluable and do have some great memories.

Thanks for taking the time to write it all down Cal.

Thanks for the comments, Jim. That was probably Al Lewis playing steel with Faron in '79; I started in '80.

Great blog - not to the insanity part

If you get to deal with steel guitar players ------ insane comes up once in a while -- crazy comes in again - another vendor the the steel guitar family and I talk ever week or so - your conversations usually start by one of us saying --"You are NOT going to believe this one. I just had a guy ask for ...............

Great read and I always like to read stuff and hear about Faron - what a talent - sorry we lost him and especially the way we lost him.
