I just changed the pickup on my 58 fender champ to a vintage vibe (like Steinar's, only I still don't sound like Steinar). I put on a set of E13 strings because they were handy, then realized that that's the first time (except when it was out of tune) that steel has not been tuned to Emaj since 1958.

So, how did you like the composite effect?

On other laps I've been playing C6 for several years both with E on top and G sometimes (6 string and 8 string). I've used A6 some, and G6 on resonator. Still have spent lots of time playing Emajor on the old champ as I was first taught as a young child with "Oahu" lessons. E13 with six strings is kind of a high register for my liking, but an interesting twist on the theme. I'm very comfortable performing in E on music that it works well with. The 6th (13th) voicings, to me, are very "deep and wide". I hope to reach an intuitive comfort level with those tunings at some point. Never a dull moment with lap steel.
