Should the switch be set at +4 or -20 for the nominal level of a Boss VF-1 into a Carvin DCM600 power amp? _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |

-20 into your preamp. The +4 setting is too hot and will introduce noise and distortion.
The Boss manuals state this is the normal setting for most applications. I do not have a VF-1, but I do have 3 of the other Boss and Roland units and they all operate fine at this setting with pedal steel, guitar and lap steel into combo as well as component stereo systems.
By the by, you can download the VF-1 manual here: http://www.bosscorp.co.jp/products/en/VF-1/ |

Usually a power amp will accept the +4 signal -20 is great when hitting a combo amp like a NV 400 .. +4 for direct to a peavey classic 50/50 or other straight power amps. |

I believe I've made the right decision in going with +4. Thanks. _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |

Nominal values for line level signals in audio are pretty standard in the US: -10 dBV for consumer audio, +4 dBu for pro audio.
-20 dBV is sometimes given as a value for a guitar or mic output level, but basically it is a signal that needs a preamp to boost it to line level.
+4 dBu should be the correct level for input to an amplifier. |
