The title says it all-I just picked up an early silverface bandmaster reverb head, and I'm looking around for cab/speaker suggestions. My only consideration is weight-the lighter the better.

I just got a 1x15 open back cabinet to use with my Bandmaster Reverb. I have a ceramic model Weber California speaker in it and I am very pleased with the sound. |

I hope this is not a hijack of this thread, I was going to start a new thread, but my situation seemed to be pretty close to Asa's, including the amp that he and I are going to be using. If I should start my own thread, just let me know.
I'm in the process of acquiring a nice '68 SilverFace Dual Showman Reverb, and also a pair of JBL D130 speakers, not in cabs.
What would be the best size and configuration for a cabinet for the 15" JBL's? Being Alnico magnets, the D130's are not rated to handle much power, so I'd like to have a cab that gives as much sonic "support" to the speakers, i.e. to get as much volume out the the speaker/cab, so the speaker doesn't have to be pushed to it's limits, as much as possible.
Thanks; Reed |

For steel: if it was mine, I'd get a 1x15 open back cabinet from Rick Johnson and put either a SICA or JBL D130F in it. _________________ To write with a broken pencil is pointless. |

I'm about to build a 15" tone ring cab with a G series JBL, and see what it sounds like.
I understand the early Bandmaster, and Showman used that style of cab. |

Hey Bill; What's a "tone ring" cab?? Got any pics, now, or during and after your building project, that you could/would post??
BTW; I have been in contact with Rick, and his "Twin" size speaker cab with open back sounds like it might be the way to go.
Thanks; Reed |

Here's a picture of a tone ring cab:

Leo Fender’s engineering group came up with a clever bass reflex cabinet in the early 1960’s. The speaker is installed in steel “hoop” called a “tone-ring”. This assembly mounts to an “inner baffle” which is attached to the front main baffle via 1-by ribs, creating the “port” between the baffles. |

Thanks for that Lynn, I'm waiting on the welding shop up the street with cad plasma cutter to cut my "ring" out of 1/16 or 3/32 steel. Mojo has one, but they look cheap, and they want big bucks for it.
By building the port into the front baffle, Leo was able to keep the depth small. |

My 66 Bandmaster has a 2X12 cab loaded with Jensen P12N's.
Sounds great for guitar, but I'd like to get a 4 ohm 15" in a cab to try it out on steel.

Lynn; Thanks for the nice pic and explanation of your tone ring cab. Verrry Interesting !! Who built that cab?, and or where did you get it? Are they available for sale?
And Bill, are you going to be building tone ring cabs for sale, or just for yourself? Please keep us posted on your build and results.

Reed, cut and paste the link right above the quote to see the builder web site and the source of the picture.
There are a couple of better pictures of tone ring construction on the MOJOTONE site. |

Hi Asa,
I have some stuff you could try out if you like. A black widow, a weber california alnico, some JBL's, and a tone tubby 12". I also have a closed back cab and the semi-open one I was using the other night. I don't have any experience with the neo speakers, but I will say that a JBL K-130 is the best speaker I've ever tried. The Black widow and weber are sort of on opposite ends of the spectrum. BW has lots of power and bass but not the smoothest transition into higher frequencies, and the weber has great mids and highs but not enough bass (it works great as a second speaker though)
YOu may want to consider putting an eq in front of the bandmaster, thats what I did when using a fender and it warmed it up a lot. You'll have to come up here soon and hang out, Mickey lives real close too. |
