Microsoft and Adobe are releasing critical patches on Patch Tuesday, which this month falls on April 13, 2010. Microsoft is releasing 11 patches covering 25 vulnerabilities, covering Windows, Microsoft Office and Microsoft Exchange. Five are rated as Critical, meaning they require no user interaction at all for infection to take place. These updates begin to be pushed out at about 11 AM Pacific time.
Adobe will be patching the recently announced vulnerability in its PDF Reader and Acrobat programs. This vulnerability is actually a feature which has been demonstrated as being exploitable. The patch will disable the feature by default, which is the opposite of how it is now. The update will also turn ON the default setting for automatic updating of Adobe Reader and Acrobat.
If you will be away from your Windows PCs during the afternoon of April 11 and have set automatic Windows updates to be installed automatically, be sure to save any work in progress. These updates will require a reboot and will attempt to restart your PC 20 minutes after installation has completed.
The Adobe updates don't require a reboot, but must close Reader or Acrobat, if they are open when the update occurs. If you have NOT turned on automatic updating in your Adobe Reader preferences, please check for the updated version manually, on Tuesday, the 13th. To do this, open Adobe Reader (or Acrobat) and click on the menu item "Help" - then go down to Check for Updates and click on it. After applying the new version Reader will close, then open. Go to Edit/Preferences and make sure that Automatically download and install updates is checked, under the Updater options.
