Greetings, I'm going to go pick up my first pedal steel on Friday. It's a Wilcox S-10 3x2 for a reasonable price, $300.00. I think it will work well for me to determine whether or not I'm coordinated enough to play, then I'll upgrade. I've been looking for an inexpensive tube amp which I think is an oxymoron. You folks have taught me alot already and I'm looking forward to learning so much more!

Welcome David, The Wilcox will make a good guitar for you. If its in good shape you should be able to add to it as you go along. Good luck and have fun.

Welcome to the SGF.
The guys here know ALL there is, and I've learned much from their posts. Might I suggest getting the Winnie Winston Book -Pedal Steel Guitar, for sale here under the "instruction" ribbon at the top. Lots of info and songs, and a quick start-up.

Hey.. The maker of your steel is a member of this board.. You can probably get upgrades pretty easily if you don't feel like shelling out the dough on a new guitar. Furthermore, he's in IL (I think) so not too far..

Personally, I like solid state amps for steel even though I play it through a tube amp more often.. (Talk about your oxymorons.. or I am just a moron...)

Don't get caught up in the "I have to have this.." hype unless you have the cash to back it up...

Thanks Guys! From what I gather just an Amp with Reverb is all that's really necessary?? Wattage, speaker size make a difference?? I'm sure you get what you pay for, but I don't want to be detered by poor sound quality just because I went cheap on an amp.

I have seen Chet's posts, I may upgrade it if it can be upgraded, have to see how it plays!

Welcome to the family David. As far as amps, 100 watts and higher usually does great for a steel. 12" or 15" speakers is usually the standard although there a few "irregulars". On the other hand, Peavey has a little demon called the Nashville 112. It is a solid state 80 watt monster that will do for practicing as well as live gigs. Its not tube, but you can't go wrong with it. Just a though.

I agree with Austin,Been using the 112 the last four years,never played a gig it could'nt handle,And it's mighty easy on my old back.Wish it had been around 40 or 50 years ago. YOU BETCHA.DYK?BC.

I picked the steel up today and messed around a little bit on it, I love it! I haven't even hooked it to an amp and it's still fun!

You have done gone and done it..........you are hooked for life. Enjoying the sound you made just one time did it.........you will never be same again.......it is an addiction worse that any other.......it causes OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder).
