Portland Oregon Steel Jam: 1:00 pm April 18th 2010 at Bushwacker's in Tualatin OR (just south of PDX, by the I-5/I-205 Fwy interchange)

Food and drink will be available through the club for $$. Also it will be somewhat different this year:

Pre- Jam SET LIST:

An internet link to the jam set-list including: keys, tempo and Nashville notation charts (which I just finished) will be posted prior to the jam. Hopefully this will alleviate some of the fear and anxiety of both newbies and old-hands alike. (Lynn Stafford will post the link in the next day or two)

MECHANIC'S WORKSHOP:

There will be a pre-jam "mechanic's workshop". Interested players can bring their axes. We'll have 4 or 5 steel mechanics available to help troubleshoot guitar problems, advise and explain DIY modifications (e.g. swap out knee levers etc)....time permitting! This will a few hours before the jam. Exact time TBA later this week.

Kudos to Harley James, Larry Behm, Lynn Stafford and Mark Simpson for organizing this event.

Thanks, Bryan! I have to give full credit to Tony Glassman for writing that out and sending it to me. My wife, Kathy does all the web site work for the band.

I talked w/ Bob Galiazzo (sp?) James Mason and Ron Baldwin at Duff's the other night. We'll have the same killer band backing us up.

Well now, I wonder which guitar or guitars I should bring. Pete will surely need one.

Did you call the club owner re: how early we can set up the "mechanic's workshop" on Sunday morning?

I called and was told that the club will open at 11:30AM, so we won't have nearly as much time for a workshop as we wanted to before the jam. They close at 4:00AM the night before and don't want to open any earlier. Maybe we could extend the workshop into the jam for an hour or so with a few of us taking turns between playing and helping those that seem to be having problems with their steel.

Lynn, that sucks! ...... I think trying to run a workshop and jam simultaneously would be difficult. The noise level and distraction would not be conducive to steel guitar trouble-shooting.


I wonder if we could start the jam at 2pm instead. If "the mechanics" got to the club at 11:30 and set up our gear, we could run the workshop from 12:00 to 1:30 pm. and have a half-hour to chill before "go-time"!

Just a thought.......

Harley, Larry, Lynn, Mark, etc.........what d'ya think about the above?

Tony my vote is to stay with the 1:00 start for the jam. Folks might be coming from Seattle etc and might need to get back before sun up and we want to allow as much time as possible for picking.

If we could identify issues or answer questions someone has about their guitar it might put us on the right track on knowing how and WHEN it could be fixed. They may have to come over to our homes and even leave the guitar there for a day or two.

The quick fixes like knee lever spacing or pedal height or pickup height we can do in a short time, swapping knee levers and changing pedal changes could and should be more time consuming.

Just my thoughts.

I have played at this place and it is pretty huge. Should be plenty of space.

I don't see any problem with a buy/sell/trade table. You might ask Harley, Lynn or Larry if there's any objections, but I think we've always had that in the past......Maybe you can come a few minutes early to organize and set it up

Having been on the forum, maybe longer than anyone in the Pacific NW, it amazes me how many steel jams there are each month and year listed in the events section. Back in the mid 70's Jeff Newman told me that the Seattle jam was the only jam west of the Mississippi River. Now they are every where almost weekly.

Having said all of that, the Ore/Wash jam is coming up and it appears to be the only one around the Or/Wa/Id/Nv northern Ca area.

Last year we sat 31 players and 10 more did not bring their gear and could have. As a jam I will lay odds this is the biggest (players playing) anywhere. The down side is you do not play much. But the up side iS YOU GET TO SEE AND HEAR YOUR BROTHERS and we have a lot of them here in the northwest and the talent level is very high.

With all of that this is yet another reminder about the big up coming jam. Call your buddies and remind them, do not assume that Harley and I did it all.
