I'm using a lap steel and sending it through a Vox Tonelab SE. I would like to recreate the sounds I hear when I plug the headphones in to the Vox as closely as possible. I don't want to run into an amp that would color the sound and I'm thinking running it directly to a PA mixer and out PA speakers is the way to go.
I'd like some suggestions here: Is this the best solution for reproducing the sound I hear in the headphones? Is there an amp that does not add its own flavor to the sound. What is the best way to amplify and maintain the sound I'm getting from the Tonelab? |

Maybe a powered PA speaker, like a JBL Eon, since your headphones are probably giving you frequencies above the usual cut-off for a musical instrument driver. If you know someone with a powered speaker, ask to try it out. You may have to re-EQ the high end slightly, depending on what you get from the tweeter. _________________ Links to streaming music, websites, YouTube: Links |

Perhaps an amplifier designed for acoustic instruments will give you more of the sound you're looking for. How loud do you need to be? _________________ Brad’s Page of Steel

I play quite a bit of lap steel and currently I'm using a Fender Blues Jr.
Sounds good to me. |

Bill,
Since the Tonelab has stereo capability whatever you do will need to have two channels to create the stereo image. Your PA idea is a good one. but in a live stituation typically only the audience will get the effect. Two amps would be neccessary for you to "get close" on stage.
All that being said, it is nearly impossible to re-create the stereo image heard in headphones with amps in a room of any type. The image built with headphones will always seem more defined with greater seperation as when listening to speakers both ears hear both channels.
As for amps, a pair of acoustic amps might work out well as suggested above. |

Been doing research today and it seems like the Tech 21 PE 60 and the Atomic are the two amps that everyone recommends to use with a modeler.
Has anyone tried either? |
