First let me start by saying this..I am strictly a beginner,I have messed around with a multikord and a little buddy a very little..I have thought of building a psg or finding an old tlc model to restore..Recently I have found an EMMONS student 3 pedals no knee .My question is how limited of an instrument will this be as far as learning by not having knees..also what is involved in adding them..

If you added 2 knees- raising and lowering the E's- you would have a terrific jump on it- and would be able to play 90% of what you hear. Cost is anywhere between $125-$250/ea- depending on who does the work (just my opinion).

I agree with Jim. For me, the two knee levers that he mentioned are an absolute must. I think that you would really enjoy them.

The Emmons student model came in a few random variations. If it's a 10 string, and has the ability for lowers on the changer, it could be all the guitar you'll ever need. Add at least a knee lever to lower E's. That guitar, set up right, will play and sound as good as any pro model. If the price is good, jump on it.

That is, if it has the changer parts to allow lowers, jump on it. I have seen a couple of Emmons student models, that did not have the lower finger on the changer, making lowers fairly complicated to add. Does it have extra parts on the underside of the changer with springs next to the changer? A picture would help a lot here.

If you really want to learn PSG, get a (more) modern all-pull guitar with at least 2 knee levers. You want to focus on playing the instrument, and not be slowed down by the instrument's limitations (no levers, mechanical issues, etc.)

It's not hardly fair to compare a carter starter to an Emmons student. The starter is a way flimsier guitar, and hasn't got the tone potential.

Hey David, Just look at the bottom of my post, and click on the box that says email. Better yet, just post a reply on the forum, and just above the box you type your message in, there is a box that says "upload picture". Then you can post it here where anyone who is interested can see it.
