Yesterday the George Strait, Reba McEntire, and Leanne Womack tour came thru St. Louis. Bruce Bouton on steel with Reba and Randy Beavers on steel with Leanne. I got to spend the day with these guys watching soundcheck and some of the show. Quite the production and a pair of great steel players. I'd comment on Mike Daily with George, but I just don't know the guy.
Bruce has a great setup and great sound, taking turns with a Dobro, a lap steel, and his Pedal Steel. Sounded great.
Randy also had a killer tone and seems to be having a great time up there. After soundcheck, Randy and the rest of Leanne's band just jammed for about 20 minutes. The crew and other players found this to be a major highlight of the day. These guys threw down some hardcore jams with a true-blue Steely Dan "Josie" to knock it out of the park. The sound crew just lit up.
The concert sound production was also really cool. They set up in the middle and project sound in all directions. The band sets up in a big circle facing eachother, and the stars get to walk the perimeter of the stage so that everyone in the house gets a great view of the show. Very impressive.
Pic's of soundcheck and the soundcheck jam.

Brad, I do know Mike and he's a very capable player and all around nice guy. At the risk of topic drift, I have a friend who has a daughter suffering from RSD (a painful nerve disorder) and she's been having a real tough go lately. She's also an avid George Strait fan. I played the 'friend card' and asked Mike if he could somehow come up with a band pic or something. He went out of his way to get a personally autographed picture from George to my friend's daughter. She was thrilled, obviously.
Great player, but better yet a real class guy.
That sure looks like a fun hang with the Bouton/Beavers guys!!! _________________ Lost Pines Studio

Donna and I were there too, but Brad described it much better then I could. All three steelers were simply great. Brad, we enjoyed talking with you and Randy. D.D. |

mike d. is a great player. it seems as if his main job has unfortunately been to recreate other players' recorded licks (which he seems to do well). why has george not gotten to the position of recording with his band? surely they could do a great job. after a million years and a zillion hits does he need the money so much that he still allows producers to say , 'oh no...you gotta use paul-buddy-sonny or no one will buy the record!'
i don't get it...seems like a lack of 'heart' on george's part...though i'm a fan. |

Chris,
I'll bet my bottom dollar that George Strait takes the very best care of all of his fellow band mates!
I've always admired Mike Daily's playing and think that he's right up there with the best of them, and have heard he's as nice a fellow as you'd ever want to meet.
I could go on for pages on this subject, but have to get out of work and go set up for tonight's gig...plus don't want to hijack Brad's cool thread.
I really liked those pics you posted of your guitar, lady, and yourself. Enjoy your sense of humor too.. You've been cracking me up in the BH threads..
Long story short: I bet the Ace In the Hole band makes mucho more dinero doing their shows (than in the studio) and have lots of fun playing locally in their time away from the road.
Later.... |

3 of the best pro steel players out there. How nice that they were together on the same bill. Wish I could have been there for the jam session. Master players. |

Mike Daily hangs in there. He has a real good singer and guitar player that works with him. George something or other. Jody. |

steve..you're probably right about the band..and thanx about the pics and such.
a friend of mine, richard casanova, played fiddle in the ace in the hole band around the first two albums. he admits george was a good guy...and says george would probably have a distinct recollection of richard's stint of bar fighting and imbibing for the love of music era.
and your steels look great...especially with the southwest background!
ps...you got the deal of the decade on that emci...
lucky.. |

I really like that girl that sings in Randy Beavers's band, very special lady, super voice and pretty easy on the eyes. And that Beavers fellow sure knows his way around the necks on that Zum. "Stay safe RGB".
This has to be one of the best shows that has ever been on the road....Three Great Steelers in Three Great Bands and Three Great vocalists. Hey Brad, thanks for the post, looks like an awesome show, my brother in Vancouver has tickets to this show when it hits his town ... looks like a gaggle of Zum's will be on display
Mike Daily is a great guy and player too - I went to Jeff's steel school with him in 82 ! That singer in his band is doing quite well too _________________ 14'Zumsteel Hybrid D10 9+9
