I've only been playing the steel for about 6 months, and I have much to learn. Can anyone give me a clue as to the benefit of using a pre-amp and how will it change or improve the sound?

Landis, I use the Sarno Steel Guitar Black Box.
The signal goes through a vacuum tube then on to the amp.I can't tell you how the tube works but to my ears it certainly sweetens the sound of the guitar!  |

As I am certain that Brad Sarno may chime in here with all the correct goop, the Steel Guitar Black Box is NOT a preamp, but a variable load resistance device placed between the pickup of a guitar and the preamp or amplifier.
His Revelation and Tonic products ARE preamps.
You could not, for instance, use just a Black Box and, say, a Stewart power amp to power you rig.
I will let other more knowledgable folks explain the preamp/amplifier question.

| Just about all guitar/keys/steel/bass amps have a pre-amp & a power amp built in, as one unit. You can use a seperate pre-amp and a seperate power amp if you want. The benefits are weight, and of course those pre-amps have a "special" sound. The downside is $$. If you're just starting out, get yourself a nice complete amp like a peavy NV 112 or 400. If you really want to stick with it, you can upgrade ($$) your equiptment. IMHOP |

Landis, it's like Bud said, use the amp's preamp! There's no need to get an outboard one, that's what the "vast majority" of players do and it's all you need in any situation........JH in Va.
