When I saw the New Riders several years ago, I was pretty blown away by Buddy's playing. That's when I knew I had to learn to play steel. Panama Red was the first song I learned after I got a pedal steel.

| Hearing Jerry on NRPS and then Buddy's work on Powerglide is when I became aware of the instrument for the first time. The steel's sound has haunted me all these years since then. |

| Buddy Cage was always my favorite steel picker. It took me 2 years to save enough money to buy an Emmons because I figured if I had an Emmons, I would sound like Buddy. To this day, when I hear him play I get excited about pedal steel. |

Here's a link to the NRPS at the Sweetwater in Mill Valley - Buddy on steel. My other steel hero is Bobby Black. Really enjoy (and still do!) what he did on the CCLPA Live from Deep in the Heart of Texas recording.

That Sweetwater clip shows some nice closeups of Buddy's Hilt steel that was stolen.
Externally it looks just like my H&S (Hilt and Smith) custom Dekley. I've only seen Larry Hilt and his guitar once since I left Dekley and don't remember what all changes he made to call it his own guitar. |
