I stumbled across this article in the July 1980 issue of GP while perusing my old back issues. This article is actually an excerpt from Dr. George Kanahele's out-of-print book "Hawaiian Music and its Musicians." Hope it's OK to post this article here. It is a good, long read (8 pages).

Last I heard, a revised version of Dr Kanahale's book was at an advanced stage of preparation

I see what you mean, Bas ! ( for those members who don't have their copy of the book to hand it's a section about Basil and his band ). Check that photo of Johnny Marsden with Kealoha Life and your good lady Pat on the following page

Mike...can't personally see any need to remove your post ...seems like some advance publicity for the book , which I would think would be welcome

Don it's not only interesting reading, but, I think ESSENTIAL reading. I find the adverts quite illuminating as well.
Clever posting with the option of the larger page.. Smart.. But then again what else would one expect from Mike ?
Having now converted to the Electric version of our beloved, just goes further to show his GOOD taste.

That's a great read!
If this book's about to be reissued I'd like to get hold of a copy for sure, so thanks for posting Mike!

I wonder if the revised version mentions hollowneck guitars & the contributions made by Knutsen, Weissenborn et al...
The article seems to jump from converted "regular" acoustics to resonators & misses out hollownecks altogether.
I guess I'm biased because I love the sound of hollownecks so much, but I'd consider them an important (if short-lived) stage in the evolution of the Hawaiian Guitar...
( Not criticising the author, just my 2c...)

I remember reading this article in 1980 (I was 17 at the time). I really didn't even know what Hawaiian steel guitar was, but I became fascinated with trying to find out what the sound was all about. Of course, when I did hear it, I thought, "Oh, THAT sound!" (Don Ho was a hit on late afternoon programming here a few years earlier, and if I remember correctly, he followed Dark Shadows).

Anyway, I also became fascinated with Sol Hoopii after reading all the hype about him. I didn't get to hear him until Rounder released their 2 volume set a few years later and I remember thinking, "What's the big deal?" Blame it on my youth.

Mike:

I took the liberty of converting your 8 JPGs into an Adobe Acrobat PDF file which should make the article easier to read:

And no mention of Knutsen or Weissenborn either.

There is an interesting reference to the originality of METAL fingerpicks and a ROUND bar developed by Joseph Kekuku and use by his peers.

Great article, Mike! I also hope that Mr. Kanahele's new book incorporates the important work of Chris Knutsen and Hermann Weissenborn in popularizing the Hawaiian guitar. Without these two gentlemen, the electic guitar may never have evolved as quickly as it did. I have several wonderful early Knutsen guitars, including a hollowneck steel made in 1909 or earlier, and several Weissenborn guitars that demonstrate the development of what we know as the steel guitar.
