so it's looking like an S-10 no pad Ultra is the way to go for me, at least for now. Maybe something older and heavier in the future...
I'm torn between black and vintage wood. would love to see some pics of vintage wood GFIs. Black is cool but vintage wood looks classic and is a bit different. Of course green would be ideal but i think thats custom only _________________ Emmons, Franklin, Mullen |

black or green...it's industrial...don't try to make it organic. |

Got to agree with Chris on this one - it's industrial...I'm kind of partial to my neon "black and blue" mica

very nice. how long is the wait for a custom design like that. i will probably end up going with black but it would be nice to have a different color trim than the usual.... _________________ Emmons, Franklin, Mullen |

Karen...If you access the "Steel Guitar Nashville" site, there are several photos of GFI guitars in various mica finishes. |

I agree with David, Karen check out Bobbe Seymour at www.steelguitar.net I just checked the paperwork on mine which was a special order in 2005: the guitar was shipped 27 days after I put down a deposit. Not sure if they still offer those "neon" accents on black but they do really stand out. I'm also under the impression that Bobbe gets various GFI's on spec and you may see a color combo/setup that's exactly what you're looking for. |

Karen...If you look closely there are subtle differences between the "Expo" and the "Ultra". The Expo has actual endplates (like most model steels) whereas the Ultra has the one piece frame. Also, the Expo is only available with the "hammertone" finish on the metal parts and is not available with the keyless tuning option. On the positive side, the Expos are slightly less expensive. I imagine the weight to be about the same on both models. |

Karen, Bobbe has a GFI Expo, slightly used, under the "Others" heading on his site. Red & Black --- WOW! Dramatic, yet classy, IMHO.

I have a keyless GFI Ultra, Wood color with gold trim.
I removed the logos, because I think it looks better that way.

Joey, do you like the keyless ? I am considering going that route because changing strings in a pain and lighter weight is always good. not 100% i like the look tho. _________________ Emmons, Franklin, Mullen |

I like the smaller size and weight reduction of the keyless. I can change strings a bit faster than a keyed guitar.
My other guitar (a Carter) has regular keys. I'm not a strong advocate of either choice. |

Karen, I have a GFI U-12 which is only available keyless. I love the keyless aspect, it helps reduce the weight to some degree, but string changes are much easier and fairly quick to do when you break one during a gig. I have had a couple of strings break thru about 16 months with the GFI. In contrast I have a Carter U-12, and ended up buying one of those small electric string winders to work the tuning machines. For the GFI I use a small phillips screwdriver for the string anchor screw, and a pair of needle nose pliers to make it easier to pass the string around the screw anchor, and keep a little tension while I tighten the screw. I could do it without the pliers, I just found they made it easier. I love my GFI, and they sounds super with an Alumitone pickup added. You won't be sorry if you decide to go with a GFI.

I may not sound good, I just don't wanna sound bad. |

Here's a D-10 Keyless that's for sale. I have a twin to this guitar. I know that you're looking for a lighter guitar, but you can see the wood color and also a closeup of the keyless tuner.

Karen, I believe that GFI has both, a vintage wood and a black mica guitar displayed on their internet website. |

For Mike Sigler: think of it like a NASCAR restrictor plate - that's why you're only allowed to play maple now and aren't allowed to play your old black GFI...too many speeding tickets!
For Karen: Mike was nice enough to let me try out his GFI Ultra at the PSGA show in Connecticut 5 years ago and that's why I wound up ordering one. It plays super-smooth, sounds great, stays in tune, is relatively light, and reasonably priced. |

You won't go wrong with a GFI. I have a Sierra, Sho-Bud LDG, and GFI. The GFI is my go to guitar now. Its the only one I will take to a gig. My GFI is keyless U12 rosewood mica. _________________ auribus teneo lupum |

If you Buy from Bobbe there is no waiting period, he has them in stock.
Also you will have a real good steel when buying a GFI, I played Boby's D10 at the florida Jam this month and have several times, they play as good as any, also Played Bret Day's Red Gold Beauty, Jerry sat down to it before me, I did not think he was going to quit playing it so I could have my turn. GO FOR IT.
