"Them Crooked Vultures" - John Paul Jones, steel

Post by Brad Bechtel »

I happened to catch the new supergroup Them Crooked Vultures (Josh Homme from Queen of the Stone Age, John Paul Jones on bass, Dave Grohl on drums) on Austin City Limits the other night. During one song John Paul Jones pulled out what appeared to be a modified eight string Melobar stand up steel guitar with a bass tuning.

The band is quite good if you like this sort of music. I look forward to hearing more of them.

Heard some popish stuff from these guys that really turned me off, but their regular fare is unsurprisingly interesting. However, it's hard to dance to.

You can hear his bass steel thing pretty "clearly" here:

I dunno, it doesn't sound either very interesting or very good to me. Rock and roll without danger or hunger is just elevator music for boomers.

He definitely indulges in odd instruments.
I really admire what he's doing in this clip that Brad posted once in another thread:
