Is there a way to listen to Yngwie Malmsteen and process the sound so it's as if he's playing Clapton's strat or Page's Les Paul or Howard Roberts's hollowbody etc? I can't stand that heavy metal sound, but some of those guys sho 'nuff can play. _________________ Steel crazy after all these years.

If you have a graphic or parametric EQ, you can fix things up a bit. I have a lot of trouble listening to Pro-Tool'd cymbals - it seems to me that after they've been time-stamped, quantized, shifted and EQ'd digitally they just sound like a burst of static, not a vibrating brass thing.
On guitars, there's often a huge resonant peak around 2K to 2.5K, even up to 3.2K - granted, this is what the artist wanted. To "fix" cymbals, I just take 'em out - start killing everything and everyone above 6K and see what happens. This often reduces some of the annoyingness of the guitars. I know exactly what you mean - Paul Gilbert is a great player and writes instrumentals every bit as interesting as Jeff Beck or Eric Johnson, but he's got that pimply/80's/Guitar Center tone. To die for.... |
