I like that SP bar you see in that pic. I wish someone would make a bar like that that was a little longer and a little heavier and had the same hook end. I could use it on 12 strings.
You have a situation where your physically going to have a problem with the round bar. You need to do whatever you have to do to be able to play the guitar. Don't pay any mind to what the norm is, make your own norm! If you need a bar with cut outs in the side in order to be able to control it then get you one of those. I use the bar you see because I lift the bar and play with the end a lot for single note playing on non pedal. I hardly use any slants. I learned a variation of the Leavitt tuning on non pedal that lets you do a lot without slanting....now all the "slanters" are getting feisty...so let me say that slanting on the non pedal is a great asset, I just was not any good at it.

I have some round bars that have grooves cut in them. I don't use them as much, but I have them in case I need to get another kind of tone.

Anyone who plays the steel guitar needs to play it like they like to or they have to, in the style they like to, using whatever techniques, bars, tricks, voodoo, etc to get what they want to play played.

Bill I saw a bar in a music store in Wasilla Alaska that is what you are looking for it's a bigger longer Shubb with the hook and I think it's a Robert Randolph model,it's about an hour away from where I live, if I take a little road trip this week I'll see if they still have it,Stu Winking Winking

Thanks for thinking about me Stu! A while back, someone here on the forum had one of those RR bars for sale...the larger one. It was less than half the price of one new so I bought it. If it just had the hook on the end, it would be perfect. I even thought about taking it down to the workshop and chucking it up in a vice and cut on it some and try to put a hook on the end, but then I would have to have it rechromed.

I contacted Shubb and ask them about maybe making one, and they said if they had enough demand they might make a run of them.

I think they might sell a few of them if they made a model for 10-12 string steel guitar. The lap guys who play more than 6-8 strings would buy them. I sure would.

See how the end of the bar has a "hook" in it.
