That ZB looks suspiciously like the green one he left
with Eric Snowball back in the early '70's, you can
clearly see that the neck he's playing is keyless,
I've mentioned this on the Forum before, I believe
it was made especially for him by ZB and Pete
Wilshire ended up with it I believe.

Thanks for posting!
I followed the link and there's even more of Red and Bert including them playing bar billiards in a pub and, heavens above, a young lady taking a keen interest in Red's ZB.

I'm pretty sure these are the final album cuts from the album (LA Turnaround) just reissued last year.

That is almost certainly the same guitar that Eric got in. Very strange tuning at the time, a diatonic tuning. I couldn't get much out of it at the time. Red had put a couple of mods on the guitar if I remember rightly.

Yes Paul and yes Ken, that is the "one of a kind" ZB with one keyless and one keyed neck I sat behind in Eric Snowballs shop.

How nice that after almost 40 years I get to talk to people who had that same experience.
I found the picture my girlfriend took with me sitting behind it. I couldnt get a note out of it, but I always thought that this was a mayor step into the universal direction. I am curious if the "ZB freaks" (nothing unfriendly ment) know more about it.

closer look at it. I have this photo which I have
posted before of Pete Wilshire playing it on some early
TV show, Ken, what what his tuning ?
All the best, Frank. Corfu

Oh, I seem to have lost part of my post before.
I meant to go on to say that the files listed these as 1973, but they're definately from '74, and Nez even notes the year.
The full 13 min doco is a bonus with the CD reissue of L.A. Turnaround and as as a bonus disc with the LP reissue, all through the US based indie label Drag City.
I actually don't have a copy yet, I knew it was due last year, but had lost track of it, and sure enough it's out in CD and LP format.

Here's some more more superb playing by Red:

That is some mighty fine playing. I really like the tunes and singing too, but Red really shines on this stuff.
Enjoy.

Ther was a band called Chilli Willi And The Red Hot Peppers... Red Rhodes played on a few tracks on their album "Bongos Over Ballham". This song is called "We Get Along". And nice B- Bender playing from Martin Stone who is now a famous book scout.

This is my favorite thing with Red Rhodes. Both the intro simplicity and backup work are genius; a beautiful compromise between "just one note" and gross overplaying. His backup is often right over the singing, but it's never obtrusive - proof that a skilled player who knows how to use dynamics can break the rules, and enhance the song!

I saw Red when he was with Michael Nesmith and he wasn't playing a Zb. I would have remembered that as I was playing a ZB at the time. I want to say it was a Sierra, but memory isn't what it used to be.

He played a 22" scale Sierra in his later years. I worked at Sierra and had a chance to talk at great length with him.
One time in St Louis he showed me where he had put a 5/16 to 3/8 rod under the guitar from end to end with a standoff in the middle. Wow sounded great.

When Red played with Mike Nesmith at McCabe's in the early 70's, he played a Fndeer 400, originally a lefty but converted by Red with cables replaced with pushrods, again by Red himself. When I asked him why, he replied that it had the best tone of any steel he had ever played. I bought my first ShoBud from him in 1976 at Red's Royal Amplifier Repair in Hollywood. He had about 20 pedal steels in his shop.

Red also played a great solo on "The Wear & The Tear On My Mind" on Dominic Troiano's solo album which dates very early 70's.
I thought Nashville was the roughest, but I know I’ve said the same about them all.
