Great program.
Maybe for instruments, but not for vocals.

I use it to slow down phrases for practicing. I don't need it to record because I have fancier stuff for that 
But yeah, very useful program. And you can't beat the price. |

John...
I took one of my infamous vocals in the key of A, and used Audacity's - change pitch without changing tempo.
No problem.
Except, I sounded much different when I went through all of theses key changes.
Initial Key - A
Then I went through the keys of C,D,E,F,G.
Actually, I sounded OK in some of these transformations.
But....AUDACITY, excuse me, doesn't have VOCALS covered to well
AAGGHH - wish I could upload a music file.
Big drag.

I just use the slider on the top right. Slowing down to 50% is the same as lowering the pitch an octave, which lets me play against a song in the right key, but at half speed.
I didn't even know that there was a way to pitch shift by key in Audacity  but I believe you about the quality...even with pricey software, there's only so much you can do with pitch correction before things start sounding noisy and weird.
FWIW my favorite recording software is still Cool Edit Pro. I haven't kept up with things very well  |

John,
Simply go to EFFECT. The drop down menu has about 20-25 options. Three of them are: Change Speed; Change Pitch; Change Tempo.
As you probably know, even with a sound file in the main window, you have to simply left-click in the left gray side panel to activate EFFECT. Otherwise all options are grayed-out.
Thanks for the Cool Edit Pro tip.
This is really no big deal for me. I was just monkeying around with it. In one of the key changes, I definitely sound just like Alvin. This could be a good thing .
