Thought I'd try my hand at C6 but I keep breaking strings when I try to tune my first string to D on the C6 neck.
Is the D supposed to be a lower pitch than the #2 E string?
Do players tune this string to G? I think Bobby Seymour said something about this in one of his youtube videos?
I only have one #12 string left so I'd like to get it right next time..
Best regards

Thank you Steve..
That's the same as my #4 string... is it still OK to use it (#17)?
The following are the gauges recommended by Carter for my guitar;
012, 015, 014, 017, 020, 024w, 030w, 036w, 042w, 054w, 068w. |

Well, Arne, you've got 11 strings listed there. For the bottom six, .068 through .024 should be right. I know there are som differences of opinion but I use .022 for the fourth, .018 for the third, .014 for the second and .017 for the D on top. |

Sorry 'bout that, didn't read the fine print " Bonus G & D top string included". I'm guessing I could use the 015 for the D? |

Use the .015 for your D string. Save the .012 for a spare for your high F# or G# on E9. |

Herby Wallace still uses a G on top. |

A lot of people followed Buddy Emmons' lead when, many years ago, he added a C to C# lever and replaced the high G with a D. The C# lever with P5 gives you the "5th on top" inversion as A6th, so you no longer need the 5th on top in C6th. That's the theory, anyway. _________________ -𝕓𝕆𝕓- (admin) - Robert P. You can get that 5th on top by lowering the 3rd string and playing strings 5,4,lowered 3rd and 1. At the 1st fret that would be a G chord. If you raise the 4 and 8 strings 1/2 step you'll get an F with the 5th on top with your standard 6th pedal and pedal or lever that raised the 4 & 8 1/2 step. Use strings 8,7,6,5,4. At the 2nd fret that would be an F6 with the C on top. |

Since going to the 1st string D, I would never do anything else. It is really terrific for single string playing. It also gives some surprising chord combinations. I love it. _________________ Amor vincit omnia |

I have been playing double 12 steel for over 40 years and have always tuned my C6 as folows: top to bottom D G E C A G E C A F C F
D is 17 Ga. G is 12 Ga. because I still pull it go G# the rest are pretty well standard Ga. with exception of 12th string F which is the first string of a light gauged bass string set.
