Murnel is a pretty amazing picker as you can see. Keep in mind he is tuned standard E-9th on the top neck primarily using strings 4,5,6,8. Think it's not that hard? Try to follow along with him on this clip and then you can see the discipline involved!

I sure would like to see somebody try to tab this. HAHAHA

Now Ricky you now the only Tab we have down here is at the corner bar. Marty Broussard had a booklet with a couple cajun songs tabbed out at one time. I need to get with Murnel and Joe Rogers abd see if we can tab out some stuff.
Just thinking back to when I hated Typing class,yet I learned to pick this way.

Murnel has wanted to produce some instruction on Cajun Steel Guitar. He doesn't quite know at this time whether or not it will be audio and/or video. The biggest problem is that chasing down his licks is like chasing cockroaches. His playing comes from every angle and he never plays the same thing twice. His ideas are endless. I have sat down with him on multiple occasions and picked up bits and pieces via his dissecting, but getting the full enchilada down is quite elusive. It is harder than it looks.

After much frustration, I finally learned to play Cajun Accordion once I realized I had to approach it rhythmically rather than musically. I could be wrong, but it almost seems the same approach applies here.

Great steel playing! I was thinking how cool it would be on the gig playing Kroger steel and then call a Cajun number and go into this style just like the Murnel and the Cajun guys play it.

Robert, you will surely turn some heads if you can incorporate this style into your current playing! To me, it's a discipline that's worth exploring!

Charlie. How are ya? This right hand technique is interesting. I learned to play steel guitar backwards, perhaps, learning this style before I ever learned to play "closed bar" style.

Your playing is fabulous Murnel! Such a cool style. Have you ever heard of a guy by the name of Mervin Faul? I ran into him a couple years ago in Hermann, Mo with a band called "La Cajun Aces." Prince of a guy and a great player in your style.

Everyone around here knows Mr. Mervin!!! He is one of the pioneers of steel playing in these parts and just about the finest person one could ask for.

I didn't get to see very many steel players in Cajun bands growing up. The only one that comes to mind is the guy that played with Belton Richard's band. I think his name was Junior Martin. Great player (and very LOUD too!)

I think Pedal Steel fits Cajun music very well. The key (and the hardest part) is emulating accordion licks. Murnel has this down and takes it a step farther!
